You do need a smartphone to set up the app if you want to use things like the shopping list.  Other than that, all you need is a wifi connection.  Also, whatever room I'm in, I have an Alexa.  As an example of just one thing, when I think of something I need to buy, it's so simple to say "Alexa add xyz to my shopping list."  When I get to the store I just click on the app, and go to shopping list, and everything I want is on there.  It's a great gift, too. Also coming into a dark apartment, I can turn on the lamps before I even get home, with the app, or just say "Alexa turn on the table lamp"

when I open the door.  I just bought 4 sets of two to take care of all my Christmas gifts.

Re: Why should I have an Echo?

The app to set it up can be put on a computer or tablet so a smart phone is not required. I did not have a smart phone when I got mine. It is the greatest thing for streaming music from various free accounts as the speaker is great. I also use it to time workouts, set timers for cooking as my stove one died, ask questions when I don't want to take time to boot up a computer or tablet. Great item!

But if you tell it to turn on your lamps or lighting, dont you have to buy those smart plugs for each lamp in each room or have a smart home?

I'm not buying but I can see the costs of each feature adding up.

@goldensrbest.  The Echo is a speaker.  You don't need others unless you just want one.  You get great sound from the Echo, not so much from the Dot.

All you need is wifi.  I would never use it though.

I keep thinking about them everytime I see them- then I think-- I've gotten to the point where I can't turn on my tv unless I have my remote - don't even know if I can turn on my tv without my remote---because I DON'T HAVE TO GET UP TO DO IT ANYMORE LIKE IN THE PAST----so then I think- how lazy do i have to be to use the echos and how much weight do i want to add on? Just sayin'.PLUS I have a lot of CD's and vinyl of my favorites- I have DVD's of my favorite movies- I'm so spoiled as it is!- so why do I need an echo????---- (but yeah- maybe eventually-- LOL!

Re: Why should I have an Echo?

Great question!!    Only in the very beginning of the presentations did they cover briefly what you would need - I was thinking just a wifi connection and the ability to download an app; however, I still was not certain if there was anything else I would need.

All the presentations got me very interested.  I have not purchased one yet; however,  the information everyone has provided has been helpful.  Not everyone (like me) is good with tech stuff so it's nice having you all explain it "in plain english".    When it gets to this tech stuff I need the books for dummies!!!!
