Re: Why should I have an Echo?

No to any of these devices, where lord knows who can record, collect data on me and my family. They don’t mention this in the sales promo....

Re: Why should I have an Echo?

I'm avoiding ANYTHING Amazon Electronics Dept. It is the most invasive of all of the data collectors who are selling info about us! They are working with Facebook and Google in this effort! I'm old enough and it's too late for me, but I'm posting this to help others. Echo is on Kindle too now, which I'm writing on and BATTLE  every time I use it. I've refused to turn on the NEW Kindle feature which includes SHOW ( I assume it shows me, not my favorite subject! ) Since NOT allowing it ON my battle has increased. You DO know that your camera at at your PC has the ability to watch you and your surroundings if not covered with a piece of tape until you want to USE it? I also find it interesting that the 123 DNA testing kit is a product for sale by the former (?...ahem) wife of Sergei " what's his face" the Russian co founder of Google!! That data is IMMEASURABLY VALUABLE to insurance companies. On HIPPA, the " privacy protection by the

govt of our personal medical info...I had a change in a pain med due to the new laws. Upon receiving the RX and immediately filling it I started reading pain medication ads on my phone and on my Kindle. Finding that PARTICULARLY interesting I called my Doctor who is also a friend. Seems pharmacies and manufacturers ( who often " gift" the medical info portals to hospitals, etc) are not prohibited from seeing and selling our info!! So why HIPPA at all. Just know the odds you're online or in person activity IS not going to be private. I WAS thrilled about the portals...not anymore if I want privacy! One search for a product I need went into my Facebook account! It was an extremely private situation I did not want to share with ANYONE  until I was ready to do so. Everything we are putting in our homes is benefiting from our trust in others, which is now only a European thing! Be careful! I do have 3 Echo devices I had planned to use as intercom for hubby, who is ill. I guess I'll still set them up, but it ticks me off each time I see them! WE SHOULD BE PAID NOT AMAZON FOR ALLOWING OUR BUSINESS TO BE SOLD! I've researched this and iPhones ... in  that category are the safest, Android ( 99% by Google, (UGH )tho China is really moving up in production double UGH!)  regardless. The worst is GOOGLE WITH CHROME. BOTH BIG GIG WATERS TOO! AND  when searching use Dckduckgo.com blow that Google app off your phone ASAP. THE safest when comparing phones were using  IPhone with Firefox and the worst ( privacy testing only) Google with Firefox(?)  which returned results 10x to 2x on  IDLE  iphone! Yes ) no longer love my Note phone! IPhone TODAY JUSY BECAUSE I'M TICKED OFF. I AM OPEN TO CORRECTION ON ABOVE, YOU SHOULD DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH but remember it's your children's data that is the most wanted if you're under age45. See details at " GOOGLE DATA COLLECTION" AUGUST 2018, Digital Context Next, author CORNELIUS VANDERBILT PROFESSOR OF ENGINEERING DOUGLAS C. Schmidt. I assume I can't put the address here, but I can find it AT THE LEAST by calling the dept at Vanderbilt School of Engineering. My hubby is a grafuate, which is why we receive this incredibly informative quarterly publication. Lot of good things happening too!

Re: Why should I have an Echo?

Expect to be inundated with paid ads from Amazon and Google. Search using DuckDuckGo but not with an app from anywhere except their homepage!! Skip about 3 pages before you see any paid i.e. Biased info from Google or Amazon.

Re: Why should I have an Echo?

It's always something! Yes, wait!! Quirks always have to be worked out. IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER IN THE CARE OF DOMEONE OR ALONE THIS CAN BE A GREAT THING! MOST DON'T KNOW IT HAS THE ABILITY TO " DROP IN " WHENEVER THE PRRSON WHO SETS IT UP KNOWS THE CODE TO DO SO. IT CAN BE MOUNTED IN A PLUG IN THE WALL, OUT OF HAND TO OTHERS AND A CHEAP( UNDER 10.00 SPEAKER) ADDED ...GET IT HERE AT THE Q! I HAVE A MILDLY RETARDED AGING BROTHER WHOM I WOULD LIKE TO " DROP IN " ON NOW AND THEN, BUT HIS MULTI MEMBER STAFF CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT SET UP!! IF HE HAD ONLY ONE CAREGIVER, I WOULD HIRE SOMEONE TO PLUG IT IN, HOWEVER HIS OVERALL MANAGER IS AWARE OF MY INVOLVEMENT LEVEL ( RATHER HIGH) AND I FULLY EXPECT HE WOULD BE SURE THE " DROP IN " OPTION WAS OFF. DANG IT!

Re: Why should I have an Echo?

@Kachina624 - Hi, I'm thinking of getting an Echo for my hubby to remind him of Dr appts (many) and other stuff.

I'm not the greatest at tech stuff and wonder if you would answer a couple of questions.

I see the single Echo here and at Amazon and a dual set - do I need 2? Better to buy here or Amazon?

Also, Echo (2nd gen) or the Echo Plus? What's the difference?

Easy to set up?

Thanks in advance for your help (and patience, lol) Riley1

Re: Why should I have an Echo?

@riley1.   You only need 1 Echo plus wifi service and some sort of computer, tablet or cell phone for set up.  They are a snap to set up; you download the Alexa app and it'll walk you through the very simple process.  Buy where it's the cheapest.  I'm not familar with the Echo Plus but doubt you need it for what you want to do
