My experience was two years ago, but I was extremely disappointed in the call coverage. I live in metropolitan City and I'm being gentle to say call quality was poor. Many calls were dropped and there were places -- including my home where I could not get a signal. As a result I cancelled the service very quickly. To their credit Tracfone was very accommodating in trying to assist me with the service issue, and QVC with the subsequent refund.

I, too, like my tracphone. Have had it for a couple years now and get triple minutes once a month thru auto load. My life is not my phone, so I don't need the bells and whistles. I text mostly and rarely use it to do much calling. Has been just fine for me. I have gotten a new phone and had no trouble rolling over the minutes from the old one to the new.

That is something to consider. When checking for coverage using the zip code checker, I found that mine uses both ATT and Verizon towers, so mu coverage is excellent.
Something for everyone to look at for sure.

I have a question for anyone who has ported over an existing number from a different carrier. Does it really take "several days" for the number to be switched over? I use my phone a lot and can't imagine being without service on either phone while the switchover is taking place (that's what the Tracfone documentation says will happen). My existing phone is a Verizon pay-as-you-go, and it's costing me a fortune right now. I would love to get something else!

DCee I have the lg840, when I activated and ported my number it just took a few hours. I did it late in the afternoon, the next morning I got a text with some additional buttons to push on the phone and it was done. THEN you call the number provided on the instructions to get your triple minutes etc loaded.
You can still use your (old) phone with the number until the process is finished.
(eta~ I ported my number I had for years from a TMobile acct.)

I think tracfone says it takes a few days to port a number to cover themselves. It is up to the company you are porting your number from that doesnt respond in a timely manner to tracphone during the process. Tracfone has very good customer service on their end of the process.

I had the absolute worst experience with this company! After talking with so many people and spending several hours with them on the phone over a few weeks they finally ended up telling me they couldn't port my number.
I ended up going with Verizon because I could not make or receive calls at the hous with Tracfone. And when I tried to get my old number from the phone I had for many years, yup, Tracfone wouldn't release it. This was the same number they didn't port over.
I'm happy for those of you who love this company, but I will never, ever, ever use them.

I may try the TSV, but if I do, I will get a new number. I have an old Verizon pay-as-you-go plan and I only have to add minutes every 3 months. I may keep both phones for awhile, just to be sure that I can get the good coverage with Tracfone that I get with Verizon.

I have used a Tracfone forever because I don't want a monthly bill since I don't use it much. Does the job for what I need. DH & I both have the LG840G. We had the LG800 before that. They were easy to set up & transfer the # & mins from previous phones. Where you will run into problems is if there is a problem with the SIM Card. If it does not work you have to wait them to mail you another one. Once you get it working it's great. When we bought the LG840G we gave DH's mom one of the LG800 Tracfones we had so she could get triple mins. That was a real pain transferring her mins & number. They had to send me a new SIM card & had to call them to do the changes & the c.s. recp screwed it up putting in the numbers from her old tracfone & numbers from the LG800 phone so they had to send me another SIM card. It took a week & 5 calls to Tracfone to get it working. I like the TSV but when I entered our zip code it says it will not work here. We use AT&T so I guess with Verizon it does not work.

Honestly, I think pre-paid phones are good for some and not so much for others. My mom, for example, has had a Tracfone for 10 years. We bought her one of the first models that came out. She has since upgraded to another model. She's always talking about how she has so many minutes that she can never get rid of. That is, bc everytime she gets a refill card, it bumps the minutes up. She always usually has over 1,000 min. on that little thing! Her phone also uses Verizon & At&t towers, so she loves it.
My husband & I were seriously thinking of going "pre-paid" last year but we like to text & search the internet a lot & think we'd end up paying more after it is all said & done. My hubby started off w/200 texts a month on a plan we had years ago. That did not work. He was going over every month and we had to pay the extra charge.
A girlfriend of mine has a Tracfone & she's always telling people to not text her much bc it takes off of her balance when she sends one & when she gets one. Once she told me that, I knew I'd burn through that allotment fast.
