I was on the fence about this lantern because of the orange glow of the candles but this is something I didn't notice and wouldn't appeal to me either.  I know they said the orange glow was because of the studio lights but other brands of candles they sell, under the same studio lights, don't look orange.  So I've been waiting for reviews.  But after your post I'm going to have to look at the blinking again.  It makes sense though that they would blink at the same time since I understood them to say that all three candles run on the same set of batteries.
