I just checked Amazon for the shipping cost for one pair of shoes for a non-prime pair of shoes. The cost was $7.99  to ship them.  I can remember before online stores became big that people would often order from catalogs with shipping charges based upon total cost of items ordered but $5 was a reasonable price and considered a bargain for people who had to travel long distances of an hour or more to shop.
