Re: Recent Sun Joe TSV - Generator

Surprisingly (to me), I started reading this post and all the replies.  We have a Generac generator.  I just asked my husband about whether it can be left out in the rain.  He said NO.  He plans to put it under our deck when we need to use it.  (To be honest, I don't even know what the thing looks like.)  I DO know, however, that it's big enough to run our whole house... even the central a/c!  He said you can also buy covers for them.  Apparently, you can leave the cover on when it runs.  News to me.  Thought it might be news to some of you, too.

Re: Recent Sun Joe TSV - Generator

@spent2much News to us - well sort of is..................

Your "G"  must be gasoline driven if it's portable  (as  in move-able) - otherwise it would be permanent installed and feed by natural gas pipe.

.

My whole house gas "G" has a metal housing and is bolted down))

@beach-mom  They did mention during the presentation that it could not get wet.  I think that any type of cover that you would use to cover outdoor furniture would work well.

Re: Recent Sun Joe TSV - Generator

You definitely need to "tent" it.   Also, I believe it needs to be at least 20 feet from the house and not near a window.

I'm not sure what you are supposed to run with that small of generator but not much.

That's the problem with TSV's, you get all wrapped up in the product, sounds so good and then you get it and wonder now what am I supposed to do with this.

I had a whole house natural gas powered Generac installed about a year ago and didn't think I would need it at all, and so far used it 4 times.  Even with storms the power very rarely went out but not anymore.

If you use the Q label, how much is the return?

[ Edited ]

@beach-mom - That's a very small generator and would be more suited to some of the things they mention in the description:  tailgating, camping.

However, you should never run any generator inside.  Ever.  The risk of dying from carbon monoxide poisoning is very real and I'm stunned that Sun Joe and QVC would sell a product that says it's for indoor use.  They risk a high liability, if anyone suffers injury or worse.  (See next post; not sure where the suggestion of indoor use came from.)

We have had a Generac portable gas-powered generator, 10,000 amp, for 20 years.  We live with New England winters and power outages are a fact of life.  We (and all our neighbors) leave our generator outdoors uncovered, when in use, at least 20 feet from the house.  Nowhere near a window or door and absolutely not in the garage.  The cabling for the generator was done by an electrician.

(If it were me, I'd send that thing back and buy one from a reputable, local company who can instruct you on set-up and proper usage.)

This from a website:

Also, does propane generator carbon monoxide?

** Propane will generate carbon monoxide (CO) gas just like other hydrocarbon fuels. The exhaust may have less odor than that of gasoline or Diesel but CO is odorless and just as deadly regardless of the fuel in use. Don't run a propane generator in your garage, even with the door(s) open.

Re: Recent Sun Joe TSV - Generator

I just watched the video for this with David.  One of the first things he says is that it's to be used outdoors...don't even put it in the garage.

I've read the description they gave online and I don't see where it says it can be used indoors, so I'm not sure where that idea came from.

Bottom line:  do not use indoors or the garage!  Ever.

This generator sounds like a bit of a nightmare to own.. I’m glad I didn’t order it. This teaches me that u have to pay attention to every single word in their tsv presentations and then some. Lol.

Re: Recent Sun Joe TSV - Generator

I live in Florida and over the years have spent a lot of money on emergency planning. Right now, I have 2 Ecoflow River units and 2 Ecoflo Deltal units. Believe it or not the Delta unit runs my refrigerator and this is all I really care about at this point. I use the River units for my cpap and I have the solar panel to charge them up.

I can handle these myself and just plug my appliance in and everything is good for a while.

That being said, lately I have been investigating whole house generators and my dream is the new solar powered generators by either Generac ot Tesslar. They are very expensive but I read that solar power technology prices are coming down.

I have a large gas generator, but I do like my EcoFlow's because I can use them indoors and by myself. They are quite pricey though.

Re: Recent Sun Joe TSV - Generator

Yes I heard them quickly mention it.  I remember thinking that I could just put it on my screened in porch.

I also remember thinking it didn't make much sense for the reason the first poster mentioned.

Heres something else...you must have access to the plug that gives the appliance it's electricity.  A big one is the refrigerator.

What should those of us who aren't capable of pulling out our huge refrigerator and find the plug supposed to do?

Just yesterday my entire development lost power.  It was a beautiful day here in Virginia.  There was no wind.

A tree just snapped off and hit power (live) wires, poles, you name it...all in the road.

It was like a domino affect straight down the line!  The entire neighborhood was without power.

With that so recently have happened; you'd think I'd have jumped at the chance to buy this...and I almost did.

What stopped me?  Well...for one thing I can't pull out my fridg to get to plug.  I know they show multiple lights, etc. plugged in.

However, they didn't say you can run a power strip off of this thing.

My brain says "You must be able to do that with so many things lit up...but...you never know.

I live in a development surrounded by trees.  They are 1 acre wooded lots.  Some of the trees are very old.  During some storms we can hear trees falling.  Some have even been hit by lightning.

Trees have fallen on my house at least 3 times.  It was hit by lightning once.  We were out of it for a full 5 months.

But I'm thinking I'd rather buy my generator from my electric company...like many of my neighbors.  I know those things CAN get wet.

After my husband died we were hit with another huge snowstorm.  No one could get in or out for 3 days.  I was without power for 4 days.  My power lines were down across my driveway.

I spent all day in my car (drove it out of garage).  I took my cat (Jack) and we listened to the radio, etc.  I have a portable DVD player.  We watched movies and I read..the cat in the hat was Jack's favorite (just kidding).

At night I slept with layers of blankets.

Was it fun?  Heck no!  Would I 'like' to do it again?  Again..no!  But I could.  It would be more difficult but "A girl's gotta do..what a girl's gotta do..". Right?

I haven't totally ruled out the QVC one.   I like the way a battery starts it AND it doesn't take gas to run.

I send back a lot of QVC stuff for various reasons and I keep thinking...this is going to be a nightmare if I have to send it back.

I have a Drs appt so I won't be home til later today.  I think they might sell out because if I was in the West coast, I know I'd buy this TSV.
