Everyone in my family has had their teeth professionally whitened by our dentist. When I asked about it she told me I was not a good candidate for that. The contrast between my skin and teeth would make it look unnatural. It never bothered me that much, so I forgot about it. The first time I took a chance and ordered it from QVC I took it in to show her before I used it. She said absolutely not. Now a few years later she's telling me if I really want to use something get "Crest White Strips."

My question is - the dentist vendor makes it seem like it's so safe, but I don't want my teeth 6 shades lighter. That WOULD look weird on me! I would only want one or two shades lighter. Can you get to a certain point and stop using it? That is, if I decide to take a chance on it! TIA! Smiley Happy

Re: Question about Supersmile

Hi Beach Mom,

Everyone has different teeth and experiences.  Did your dentist say why not to use Super Smile?  I've had great luck with it in th past.  I would not say my teeth changed that drastically but they did whiten and I had no side effects.   On the other side, White strips were super painful and stayed that way for weeks after I stopped using them.  Is it something you can use every other day or weekly instead of daily or use just once daily?

My sister had the opposite happen, didn't like super smile but uses white strips with no issue.

I guess my big question to my dentist would be why and I'd keep in mind everyone (including your dentist) has an opinion on what looks good.  Only you can decide that!

Re: Question about Supersmile

@beach-mom

I pretty much agree with @Jtdmum.  It depends on why your dentist said not to use the Super Smile.

I’m one of the people that the vendor stated has been on auto-delivery for the original formula for years.  I usually buy every TSV.  I haven’t yet used the extra whitening variety though, so I can’t speak to that.

I have very sensitive teeth and gums.  Have had for all my life, and now it’s worse as my gums start to recede.  I used to use the drug store sensitive brands, but even they caused irritation.  And I dreaded going to the dentist to have my teeth scraped for cleaning because it hurt so much, even with the hygienist being careful.  That’s actually why I started using the Super Smile to begin with.  I was more concerned about getting the stains off the underside of my teeth to avoid that scraping than whitening my teeth for appearance.

All I can say is that it works for me.  Super Smile causes no irritation compared with other toothpaste.  And my teeth are a few shades whiter.  Not dramatically, but just nice and normal looking.  I don’t look like I have had professional whitening, but my teeth look decent.

Can you stop using Super Smile?  Of course.  If you happen to have sensitivity, like anything else, once you stop using it, you will go back to whatever was happening before you started it.  And your teeth will go back to the color they were too.

Re: Question about Supersmile

I use and swear by AP24 by NuSkin.  It's a whitening fluoride toothpaste.  It has a pleasant taste and it starts to whiten in just 4 days.  The difference in my teeth was remarkable.

I had a metal retainer on my bottom teeth for so many years, I'm embarrassed to admit it.   I finally got it removed, and from the metal being around 2 of my bottom teeth for so long, they were visibly discolored.  I started to use the AP24 and within 4 days, the discoloration is completely gone.

It's not cheap but to me it's well worth it.  I've tried whitening pens and they've done nothing and I've tried other whitening toothpastes and they've done virtually nothing and so many of them have a gross taste.   White strips made my teeth too sensitive and I hated the taste of those too and the slimy feel.

Re: Question about Supersmile

[ Edited ]

I, too, have been using SuperSmile for longer than I can remember.  I have been on auto ship for the original configurations for a long time . I use this daily ~but also  brush with regular toothpaste ~ I brush my teeth at least 3 times a day .  When I wake up I brush with reg toothpaste.  But after morning coffee I use Supersmile and use it right before bed as well.  I had my teeth profesinal whitened with treys in the mid 1990's.  My teeth were very white.  I have not had them professional done since then .  I have tried other things but once I found Super Smile I have stuck with it .  Every hygenist has always remarked how white my teeth are . I will say my teeth are not crazy blind you white, just very "clean" looking .

I am buying this TSV ~ even though I tried to talk myself out of it last night ~  googled "whitning toothpastes" because to be honest it does seem crazy to spend this much money on "tooth paste "~ but it lasts and my teeth do look nice ~ ( I am  in my mid 50s)

Re: Question about Supersmile

Your teeth will only get white to a certain stage. Supersmile won't give you the fake white 'news anchor' veneer look, some people have. It's safety profile stands asit has been on the market for 30 years.

It does as the DDS states, removes daily build-up of coffee, tea, berries, etc. If you stop using it, then the build up stays on your teeth until your next visit to the DDS for cleaning.

Re: Question about Supersmile

Most DDS don't know Supersmile, don't know Dr. Smigel. I have used SS for 10+ years, and I've asked numerous DDS if they know Dr. Smigel or Supersmile, None thus far has heard of either. Yes, I heard the DDS say last night, change DDS if they haven't but, truly, not many have heard of Supersmile or Dr. Smigel.

Your DDS recommending Crest white strips, not a surprise. Most professionals generally won't recommend another professionals product and Crest is widely accepted by the ADA.

My neighbor had adult braces and it was recommended that she use AP24 when the braces were removed. Her teeth look great and she still uses it 2 years later.

I had never heard of it but the 2 of you have talked me into trying it. I ordered it from Amazon. I am anxious to try it.

Do you know if it is sold in stores?

Hi LD.  Doesn't that have "silica" in it though?  I had a friend who used it, and I thought I saw it contained silica.  Is that what the Supersmile guy says peels off enamel?   I have had ZOOM 3 times over the course of many years.  My teeth are pretty white, but I like them to stay white.  I'm always looking for a toothpaste that works, but I guess I don't want silica.  Any info on this?  Perhaps I'm mistaken.

Thanks

Yes, it does have silica if you look at ingredients on Amazon.  I am going to give this a try as I just can't tolerate the Crest White Strips after a few days and hate sitting with them in my mouth.  I can always send this back if it doesn't work for me.
