A relative who has one of the big Keurigs told me the water chamber gets nasty and there is special cleaner for it.  He said you have to run it through the cycle several times for the chamber to get clean.  That alone would keep me from buying one - besides the cost of K-cups.  I like my drip coffee maker.

I had a keurig, that died after 8 yrs,or so , i wanted to see if this was true,i took a hammer to it , broke it apart ,there was no blackness at all in the water tubing.

We do not own a kuerig but I remember when Starbucks struggled with jumping into the k cup market b/c of the landfill issue. It seems the coffee makers are getting cheaper as the $$ is in the k cups. Like cheap printers/expensive ink.  The best cup of home coffee I had was from a $2000 Jura machine. Ding dang!

Re: Please do a little research before buying the Keurig

I've mentioned the non recyclability to a few people and I'm astounded that most had no idea. If people know better I'm sure they'll do better and I thank those that use their My K-Cups.
It seemed a bad idea to me from the beginning because obviously you're creating trash but to be honest I had no idea until recently that they were not recyclable. And to the individual that mentioned the recyclable cups on the market, please be careful because the reason the K-Cups aren't recyclable is due to a metal piece that is required in the design in order to work with a Keurig machine

Re: Please do a little research before buying the Keurig

It's only the newer machines that have the issue with the non-branded K-cups that won't work with the machine.  However, there was a company that figured out how to bypass it, so if you have one of those newer machines you might Google it.

Re: Please do a little research before buying the Keurig

this is very sad. 150000 new people throwing K Cups into the landfills.
Keurig is aware of this problem because they've promised to rectify it by the year 2020! Disgusting

Love my Keurig, I drink one a cup a day, and I enjoy every drop. I am so tired of everything being a worry and a cause.

@granny me
I guess I was being generous to assume you were purchasing because you didn't know better; I find it horrific that you just don't care. And..scary
More than 5 billion are already in landfills and that doesn't 'worry' you?

I am not worried at all about my Kcup, but more so about you being horrified and scared. You must be very blessed in your life if this is what is horrific and scary.

Being told if I my cancer comes back the third time could make me a quadriplegic that is horrific and scary.

Pick your battles.

I've been living on borrowed time for the last four years. apparently that's the difference between you and I. I care what I'm leaving my children and their children

Even more you should not worry and enjoy the time you have. The world will spin when we are both gone.

I wish you well.
