I read the product information, but nothing as far as I can see indicates this item needs to be charged.

Cubii Jr, no charging...Cubii Pro, does need to be charged.

I own the cubbi Jr and it doesn't need to be charged. However, there is a cubbi Pro that syncs up with an app  on your phone so it is possible that model may need to be charged.

The read out on it must have some power source.  Does it take batteries?

The display requires a battery:

We own this piece of exercise equipment. There is nothing to charge, plug in, just pedal away and exercise your legs. We like it and try to use it.

nothing  has to be plugged in or charged.  Just have to screw in the pedals.  I love my cubii Jr

My sister has this is  and I ordered one for myself today.  Nothing to charge or plug in.  Some have bluetooth technology but this one doesn't.

I tried hers today and really liked.

Cubii does not have to be charged - it runs off a battery/batteries. The power used by the battery/batteries is for displaying the metrics as you are pedaling.
