@Kachina624 You've hit the nail on the head. "Luxury" spending is the key term here, which will always happen in America because the "haves" will always be able to afford what most consider unreasonable expenditures.
Still, you can't blame average people for being surprised that there are people who will happily spend big bucks to have chicken nuggets flown to them on dry ice.
The world is a curious place.

@RollTide2008 So, just truly curious here as I have always lived in medium or small towns that allow easy, not-too-expensive access to most needs of daily regular life. Where do you shop? And do you like living in a downtown high-rise? Why?

I like not being dependent on a car. I like being able to walk to work, to musuems, and professional baseball games. I like the energy of the city and how diverse my neighbors are. Why do you like living in a small town? I've done that and thought it was terrible. Everything isn't for everyone.
I garage my car in a secure parking structure 6 blocks from my apartment. To go to the market, I have to walk 6 blocks to get it, drive to store in the suburbs, about 12 miles there and back, hope there's a spot in the fire lane to unload, run my packages through the lobby and upstairs to my apartment, put away the cold items, dash back down to the car, and then park it and walk home. It's not terrible, but it does make me less resistant to paying for the convenience of having things delivered and checked in by the doorman.

I can buy three live chickens for less than that. AND I get feathers with.
