watching movies: at home or in a theater?

My DH and I were talking about a movie we want to see, and trying to decide if we would watch it from at home from a streaming service or on "the big screen".

There's been so many mass shootings, drive-by shootings, etc.in our area that I'm a little apprehensive about being in a public place. I really prefer to see movies in a theater but I don't want to get killed doing it.

Opinions, please.

I absolutely, positively, refuse to stay in my house and never venture out again.  No way.  If it is my time, then it is.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

IMO there are some movies that should be seen in a theater.  Others would be fine watching on a small screen.

I haven't gone to a movie theater in years but the very remote chance of a random shooting wouldn't stop me if I really wanted to see the movie.

Re: watching movies: at home or in a theater?

I prefer watching at home.

Even prior to the pandemic, I found myself wiping the chars in my area with wipes, who knows who was sitting there, what food was smeared, or any germs left. Guess I have germophobe tendencies.

And I really do not enjoy big crowds. On the other hand, I find the theaters are too loud, and can sometimes give me motion sickness with the movements on the big screen.

Oh my, I guess I have many issues. LOL

Home it is!! And my popcorn is healthier, too.

If the chance is more that remote, you might change your mind.

Home currently for many reasons...years ago, I did experience amazing IMAX films that could not be duplicated at home and I appreciate that I did attend.

@GoneButNotForgotten  I completely understand how you feel.  A few weeks ago there was a shooting in a theatre a few towns away from our town.  It was more like a gang shooting and fortunately no bystander was injured or killed but it could have ended in a tragedy for some innocent person.  It was in the middle of the day and children were at that movie.

I'm not paranoid but I am aware of what can happen in any public place.  When we go shopping or into a restaurant I make sure that I take notice of where the exits are and where we could take cover if necessary.

It's sad that we have to live that way but it's better to be aware of the dangers than to blissfully believe that it will never happen in our town.

I think back to my childhood and how we used to spend Saturdays at our local movie theatre and never once even considered being fearful of what might happen.

Of course we also never had to have live shooter drills in our schools either.  The most we had was fire drills.

I don't blame anyone for being uneasy when they are out in a public area.  I think it's smart to be cautious.

It's been over 25 years since I've been to a theater.

I watch movies at home.

Re: watching movies: at home or in a theater?

Since comfort is top priority for me home it is.  Costs less, I can readily move about if I want/need to, I can snack on real food or junk snacks of my choice, I can talk about a scene if I want to or shush someone if I want to both without worrying about a stranger's reaction.

The only thing missing from the theater is the smell of the popcorn which I cannot duplicate at home.  Then again, I'm not a big popcorn fan but I do like the aroma.

The eyes through which you see others may be the same as how they see you.
