A refreshing change of pace.  Not all that frequently does Hollywood delve meaningfully into the life of those who are spiritually-driven.  And this is well done.  Joel McCrea (a huge favorite of mine) brings his warmth, his patented authority and strength (and his subterranean humor) to the part of a minister struggling to bring order to a turbulent, post-Civil War town.

McCrea experiences romance, marriage, (to Ellen Drew) adoption, adversity and turbulence.  He faces down the lynch-minded Klan, prepared to bring harm to his friend (Juano Hernandez).  He defies prejudice, illness and skepticism.

A cast of excellent character players, directed by the versatile Jacques Tourneur ( "Out of the Past", "Cat People", "Berlin Express".)    Watch for lovely young Amanda Blake, (later, famously, "Miss Kitty" in "Gunsmoke"):

This was reportedly Joel McCrea's favorite film that he made.
