10:00 p.m. Eastern-- "Look Back in Anger". Richard Burton, Mary Ure, Claire Bloom, Edith Evans, Gary Raymond, Glen Byam Shaw, Donald Pleasance
Director Tony Richardson's filmed treatment of playwright and screenwriter John Osborne's ("The Entertainer", "Luther", "Tom Jones") famous play of the same name. Didn't "Look Back in Anger" start off the whole British "kitchen sink drama" phenomenon, instigating a rush toward unvarnished realism in the English theater?
Burton is Jimmy Porter, a working class young man who rails against the world, and his wife (Mary Ure), who is of a higher class and often the object of his ire. When her combative friend (Claire Bloom) comes to stay with them, she becomes a target of a different sort....
John Osborne was a brilliant, reckless, fascinating, tempestuous writer, and "Jimmy Porter" in many ways is his autobiographical stand-in. Who better to play this volcanic young man, than Richard Burton. I love the intensity of the young Burton.
In fact, "Look Back in Anger" is extremely lucky in all its gifted cast-- Claire Bloom, Mary Ure, Edith Evans, fabulous Donald Pleasance. Burton was nominated for an Oscar for his performance.
Side note: The frequently seen but excellent "Dark Passage" with Bogey and Bacall is also on at 2:45 p.m. Eastern. Other classic goodies on Friday too; see schedule below:

Richard Burton was handsome pre-Liz & alcohol.
That movie should be good since it's a British film. Thanks for the heads up!

Agreed, @Mz iMac and @spiderw -- he was!
He was self-taught, intelligent and a brilliant raconteur. Here's a piece of video for anyone who likes Burton. He's on D i c k Cavett, talking about his Welsh coal mining father and brothers, some of whom died ultimately of mining-related ailments (lung, etc.) My paternal grandfather was a coal miner in south Wales also, so I love hearing about this.
Burton says his brothers told him about this legendary seam of coal, that starts in Basque country in Spain, comes up in Wales, goes under the Atlantic and comes up in Pennsylvania coal mining country in the United States...
He is absolutely mesmerizing talking about this:

@Oznell I, so, enjoy your movie recommendations as well as your reviews. Very insightful and makes me enjoy each recommendations even more.
John Osborne, the Last Angry Young Man! Yes, his plays and movies were "gritty" and more real filled with anger, disappointment and introduced us to a whole new world of British films. Taste of Honey comes to mind as well as Alfie, so many others. He had a sad life and had problems with alcohol as well as Mary Ure who had the same and sadly took her own life.
Richard Burton had the most wonderful voice as did Alexander Scourby, pure velvet. Burton was a marvelous storyteller as was Peter O'Toole and Orson Wells, David Niven, too! All gone now..............

Very intense movie, full of angst and anger. Unvarnished realism of post WWII Britain. Burton was
quite an actor.

Oh, yeah, @Somertime, you're so right about Scourby-- had forgotten him!

The video of Burton speaking about his father and the mines is mesmerizing as you stated. What a story and life. You must have been interested in what he was describing since your grandfather also worked in the mines.
I wasn't at all aware of this part of Burton's life , thanks for the video!

My pleasure, @spiderw, glad someone else enjoyed it!

I wish the clip of the interview was longer. It was so interesting. And ****** Cavett was such a good interviewer. You miss that today. So many times the interviewer has a set of questions written down and they ask them in order. No matter how the conversation is progressing. But ****** Cavett asked questions about what Richard Burton was talking about at that moment.
And what Richard Burton was talking about - I kept thinking about the movie How Green Was My Valley.
