Great info, @Susan Louise.  The players in this are so good in their roles.   I just adore Victor Moore.  He memorably supported Fred Astaire in one of his iconic films.  Don't you love that final image of him jauntily making his way down the avenue, faithful dog tucked under his arm... so touching!  I find him almost Chaplinesque...

I left my hair coloring on an extra 20 minutes this evening so I could watch this wonderful movie again. It's one of my top 5 favorite Christmas movies.
