@Dusty1   I just finished watching and really enjoyed the documentary.

I had no idea the damage the term "Bratpack" caused.  When Andrew was interviewing that reporter, you could see the anger in his eyes.

I loved "St. Elmo's Fire" and thought they all most likely remained friends...surely not the case.

I was surprised Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald did not meet with Andrew and talk with him.

@Mersha  @Dusty1

Damage to the actors or the reporter?

I saw only the Breakfast Club (the were in detention, right?)  and none of the others, so the term Brat Pack didn't mean much to me.  I think the ads for the other movies made them seem .... redundant.

@Tinkrbl44  From watching the documentary, I think none of the "Brat Pack" appreciated being labeled that way.  It lumped them into a certain box and felt it affected their careers, some more than others.

Andrew was very upset with the reporter for "damaging" his career.

Did Andrew need the money and do the documentary...I am sure he did.  I think he also has been dogged by the issue for years and wanted to address it and put it to bed once and for all.

Re: Watching the Andrew McCarthy documentary "Brats".

It seems like Andrew McCarthy let it consume him and he had a hard time moving forward whereas the others may not have liked it but moved on.

It was fun seeing those people and hearing what they had to say but regardless if he had that label or not I don't see he was ever going to be leading man or superhero or whatever he feels like he missed out on material.  And I have always liked him.

I think them claiming their movies were the first time that there were movies centered on their age group was somewhat delusional.  I guess they had never seen nor heard of some little movies like Palm Springs Weekend, Where the Boys Are, all the Gidget movies, etc.  I think they give themselves too much credit.  Loved the movies, but get over yourselves, boys.

Does anyone know the name of the reporter that supposedly ruined Andrew McCarthy's career?

I'd really like to know what was stated that evoked such a strong reaction.  It used to be that "any publicity was good publicity".

@Tinkrbl44- Writer David Blum coined the phrase. It's a play on the Rat Pack which was Frank Sinatra's posse.

However, the original Rat Pack was started by Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. (just an aside)

Re: Watching the Andrew McCarthy documentary "Brats".

@Tinkrbl44 It was an interview he did with Emilio Estevez for New Yorker Magazine. I go tthe feeling that Emilio thought it was going to be a good boost for his career & then the writer turned it into something else.

"Hollywood’s Brat Pack

They’re Rob, Emilio, Sean, Tom, Judd, and the rest — the young movie stars you can’t quite keep straight.

By David Blum, a writer and editor based in New York City. "

Re: Watching the Andrew McCarthy documentary "Brats".

This is an interesting post I just saw on FB.  It may explain what really irked AM about the article.  Has anybody else here actually read the article?

"So after 40 years I *finally* read the infamous article about The Brat Pack, from New York magazine. Was surprised to see just how LITTLE Andrew McCarthy was actually referenced. Granted, the main mention of him was memorable...the author sharing that another, unnamed Brat felt that McCarthy "wasn't going to make it." But that was basically it, about Andrew. The article mostly focused on Rob, Judd and Emilio. Who all seem to have moved on years ago, although we didn't hear from Judd in the documentary. Maybe Andrew got consumed with curiosity over who called him out? For the Brat mentioned the least, he got the most obsessed. IMHO.
