Hard to imagine their enormous popularity, and the almost royal mystique of their legendary Hollywood lair,  "Pickfair". 

She was such an intriguing and elusive waif, and he was so athletic, perennially tanned and effervescent.   Cary Grant was said to have studied Fairbanks, and to have modeled his phenomenally successful screen persona on that of his idol... 

It was lovely while it lasted.
