Re: The Undoing On HBO

[ Edited ]

I really enjoyed this series and this has been such an interesting thread, thanks to everyone and such great observations and theories...I will miss sharing with all of you.

It did leave me with some questions...What was the meaning of all of those flashbacks that Grace was having throughout  the series?...They certainly led us to believe that Grace was aware of or had knowledge of the affair between Jonathan and Elena...Why didn't Jonathan just get rid of the sculpting hammer rather than wrap it up and place it in the outdoor fireplace?...That didn't make any sense...Why did Henry put it in his violin case rather than get rid of it?...Why did Elena paint a portrait of Grace and why was she being so seductive with her?...Why was the detective so hard on Grace from the very beginning?

The turning point for Grace was when Jonathan dared try to implicate Henry in the murder of Elena...This is when Grace was determined to testify...all under the guise of being a supportive wife who believed in Jonathan's innocence....She had Sylvia give the prosecutor crucial infomation...the incident at the Summer cottage when Jonathan startled her and she ended up calling the police (prosecutor then obtained the tape of the call)...and also information regarding the conversation between her and Jonathan's mother...both of which Grace knew would insure and seal Jonathan's fate.

Does anyone think that Grace ever really felt that Jonathan could be innocent or do you think that she had doubts all along and just didn't want to believe it.

Great acting and the young actor who played Henry was outstanding...I did think that Nicole seemed rather composed and robotic throughout with limited facial expression.

@MyShadowLove I just watched the last episode again, as somtimes I feel like I miss things. It was so good! I totally agree with you that that was the turning point with Grace, when Jonathan accused their son! I do think that Grace was suspicious of Jonathan all along, but wanted to believe him, until the hammer was found, that was the breaking point!

I am not sure about the Flashbacks, other than maybe it was Grace's imagination picturing them together once she found out about the affair, maybe? I really think that Elena wanted them all to be close with each other, her son and Grace's son, and she and Grace and Jonathan, that was why she was so kind and kind of flirtatious with Grace in the beginning. I think Elena's husband loved her, but she didn't love him.

Why didn't Jonathan get rid of the hammer? Even his attorney said at the end, why didn't you get rid of the hammer?I felt so sorry for their son Henry, and he is such a good actor! He can be seen next in The Quiet Place 2.....He was phenomenal in the 1st one as well.

I think that Grace's character was meant to act the way that she did, kind of aloof and not tons of emotion, because Nicole is a superb actor, and I think by her being this way meant more than if she were real emotional........Just my own opinions!

I've read some reviews that took issue with the same things posters here have. No matter that it was flawed, many of us were entertained, invested in it which, to me, redeems it.

@CANDLEQUEEN ...Thanks for recommending the "Quiet Place"...I am so impressed with the young actor who played Henry and I don't recall seeing him before, so I will check out the movie a little later on...As one poster had shared earlier, his acting talent was right up there with the stellar actors and he played his role to perfection.

@CANDLEQUEEN ....I see where this question was asked by many here...."why didn't Jonathan get rid of the hammer".

All I can think of is that David Kelley (writer of the series) had to make it this way in order for Jonathan to question Grace whether their son did the murder;(starting the wheels in her head to starting spinning)....in order for Grace to turn on Jonathan and contact her lawyer friend to help the prosecutor....in order to leave Jonathan once and for all and lastly, in order for the jury, hopefully, to find Jonathan guilty.

If Grace's son never found this hammer and if Jonathan threw it away, then Jonathan might have been found not guilty and look what Grace and her son might have had to go through....going back and letting Jonathan live with them again.

Amazing show, not your usuall who done it.  The acting was superb and it was interesting that it went from a "who done it" in which we thought it could have been any of the characters, including to the physician's son to,.....how is it going to end?  Will wealth and privilege get him off?  After we found out about his sister's death from his mother, we knew he was sociopath.  We knew he did it.  The story went from "who did it" to "how does it all end".  The wealthy ususally do not pay for their crimes.  We thought and he thought Grace was a "stand by your man" woman and that he could twist her in any direction he wanted.  And then, that hammer which snapped the emotional hold he had on Grace.  And Grace took him down!

@chrystaltree  Please don't say "we thought." I participated on this thread and some of your "we thought" sentences are not what I thought. You can speak only for what you thought.there were a lot of varying opinions here.

I guess it doesn't matter much now but I thought she was talking about whomever she was watching it with.  Husband, friend etc.

I was in my car this morning listening to WCBS FM ( in New York). Patty Steele said HBO's rating were huge for this. Viewership kept building after each episode with the last episode equaling or surpassing Big Little Lies. She also said there may be a second season in the works!!!!

I loved this series , i have not been feeling well at all , and this is the first time i have turned the TV on in weeks , i told myself , just watch a little at a time , that didn 't last , i was watching 2 episodes at a time , for me to be able to stay up that long in weeks says a lot. I don't know how i feel about ending , i might have gone a different direction , but i hear it is true to book ? I have no doubt , season 2 will be back in one form or another . Maybe a whole new cast with a whole new direction. David E Kelley only puts out quality projects .

I was visiting with my sister today, she says "oh, have you heard about The Undoing", I say " YES, I'm obsessed "! She says " don't tell me about", I had to break the news to her it's on HBO which she doesn't have!
