William is next in line after Charles and Charles is already in his 70's.  

So it will happen.

 Was talking about this with DH last night.  Even though the royals bring in $$ with tourism, the upkeep of the royal family is big money for the Brits.  After the Queen passes, only time will tell...  We are in different times, and generations past from when the Queen took the throne

Charles will be king, maybe only for a short time, certainly not 70 years,  but he already has plans to downsize the monarchy.  It won't be as grand as it is now.    But it won't change their charity work.   Diana was the last popular active Royal and those days are long gone.   

When William becomes king, the queen has stated she also wants Kate to become queen.
