THURSDAY IS BETTE DAVIS DAY ON TCM

150118-bette-davis-09.jpg

The Great Bette!   Starting at 6:00 a.m. Eastern, there are plenty of goodies, although as usual, some glaring omissions.

A few highlights--

7:30 a.m. Eastern--  "Front Page Woman".   Young Bette is an ambitious newswoman, sparring and romancing with fellow reporter George Brent.  Frothy, fun.

9:00 a.m. Eastern--  "Dangerous".    Unlikely pairing of a refined architect ( Franchot Tone) and a famous, but heavy drinking actress who may be seriously on the skids...  Bette won an Oscar for this.

2:00 p.m. Eastern--  "Dark Victory".    Rich girl faces up to some very difficult news, falling for her doctor ( George Brent again, always a good foil for her) in the process...

4:00 p.m. Eastern--  "The Great Lie".   Socialite Bette is in a very uneasy love triangle with beau George Brent and rival, neurotic concert pianist, Mary Astor.

10:00 p.m. Eastern-- "The Letter".    Arguably, Bette's best film, and role?  Directed by William Wyler.  She's flawless, as is hapless husband Herbert Marshall, and lawyer James Stephenson.

Midnight Eastern--  "Deception".   Set in the hothouse New York classical music world, Bette adores cellist Paul Henreid, who doesn't know that Claude Rains is her ferociously jealous paramour.  Fabulous art direction and set design.

Re: THURSDAY IS BETTE DAVIS DAY ON TCM

Oh, how I love my Bette Davis movies!! My favorites are Now, Voyager - The Petrified Forest - Mr. Skeffington - and All About Eve.

As I've complained on here many times (haha), Comcast has taken TCM from my line-up, so I won't get to see these movies tomorrow.

All those who have TCM  -  Enjoy!

@Citrine1 , and @seehorse , great lists of faves!   I know it isn't quite the same, but if you can stand to watch movies on your computer, there are several rewarding Bette Davis movies that stream free on youtube, to watch whenever the mood strikes.

For you or anyone else interested, just google: free Bette Davis movies youtube.

A few that are available:

"Of Human Bondage",  with Leslie Howard.

"The Bad Sister",   with Humphrey Bogart.

"Phone Call from a Stranger" with Gary Merrill and Shelley Winters

"The Virgin Queen",  with Richard Todd and Joan Collins

"Storm Center",  with Brian Keith

"The Catered Affair"  with Debbie Reynolds and Ernest Borgnine

"The Whales of August"  with Lillian Gish, Ann Sothern, and Vincent Price.

Edited to add--  Great, @going to Carolina !  Glad to encounter another Bette enthusiast. We used to have droves of them here on the Q....

I'd be hard put to pinpoint one favorite.  I guess "The Letter" in terms of a brilliant, subtle performance.  "Dangerous" because it's such a roller coaster ride for her, and a complex, self-destructive character to play..  And "A Stolen Life" with adorable Glenn Ford.  Of course, "All About Eve"...

Of her more obscure films, I really like "Winter Meeting",  in which she's a poet who gets swept up with a younger, impetuous and unlikely suitor.  And, an English movie she made with hubby Gary Merrill and Emlyn Williams, "Another Man's Poison", for its noirish tone.

Hasn't lighting the two cigarettes become iconic? I hate saying "iconic" it is so overdone.
