Lifetime Cancels 'The Lottery'

The Lottery,” Lifetime’s scripted series set in a dystopian future that dealt with the threat of human extinction, has come to an end. Sources confirm that the cabler has pulled the plug on the project after one season. The 10-episode series, which hailed from “Children of Men” co-writer Timothy J. Sexton and was not to confused with the 1948 short story of the same name by Shirley Jackson, focused on a global fertility crisis.
It was also more dreary in tone than some of Lifetime’s other scripted series, like “Witches of East End” and “Devious Maids.” Upcoming projects include “Un-Real,” which stars Shiri Appleby and offers a behind-the-scenes look at a competition dating show, and “Damien,” a thriller from Glen Mazzara that is based on the 1976 horror pic “The Omen.” Lifetime also working with exec producers Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Allison Shearmur on a pilot based on the “Clan of the Cave Bear” book series.

The Lottery: Lifetime TV Show Cancelled, No Season Two

As expected, there won’t be a second season for Lifetime’s future drama, The Lottery. The cable channel has cancelled the TV series after one season of 10 episodes.
The Lottery takes place in the year 2025 when our planet is in the midst of a fertility crisis. Women can no longer bear children and the human race faces extinction. After years of research researchers have been able to fertilize 100 eggs and a lottery is held to determine who can carry them to term. The cast of this thriller includes Marley Shelton, Martin Donovan, Yul Vasquez, Athena Karkanis, Michael Graziadei, David Alpay, and Shelley Conn.
The show premiered in July to 1.08 million viewers but lost more than 30% of its viewers in week two and the numbers kept sliding downward as the season progressed. The finale, which aired on September 28th, drew just 425,000. The season averaged 670,000 viewers, a far cry from Devious Maids’ 1.81 million average.

I can't say this is surprising, but it is disappointing because I'd hoped The Lottery would continue. It was really different as sci-fi goes.
I enjoyed it, but wondered exactly how the plot would be advanced in subsequent seasons.
The storyline was simultaneously entertaining, somewhat horrifying and extremely provocative, causing viewers to think deeply about Big Government as Big Brother, dictating even the most intimate aspects of our private lives. - Keri
