THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER TCM 3:45 P.M TODAY 2/24

Alan Arkin as a deaf mute and lonely man. Sad but very fine movie.

I have never seen this movie but IMO Arkin is a great, underrated actor.  One of my favorites with him is The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.  Wonderful movie!

I will tape this movie.  I think I have seen it, probably when it first came out.  It sounds sad as you said but I am sure it is worth the watch. Social issue movies always interest me, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, Patch of Blue to name but a few.   I am sure this movie fits the category.

@spiderw  I saw it when it first came out in the 1960s and many times since. Funny how I can watch this sad film over and over but not Midnight Cowboy.  Arkin's performance is just amazing! Reason enough to watch it, and of course the period brings back a lot of memories.  The film introduces Sondra Locke.

i hope you and @kaydee50  watch it and, if so, please let me know what you think (I see you are taping it).  It's a great movie!

Pearlee!

I finally had the chance to watch The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.  Alan Arkin was superb in his role as a deaf mute. He deserved an Oscar.  In fact everyone was great in their roles and the story line excellent.  Of course I cried at the end, very sad  I don't know how I missed this movie but I do not recollect seeing it.

Thanks for recommending , it surely is my kind of movie.  By the way I believe Locke was married to Clint Eastwood at some point, she was very young in this movie.

One of my all time favorite movies.  I absolutely bawled and I never cry.  If you haven't seen it, find it.  Excellent.

@spiderw   I'm so glad you remembered this thread to let me know what you thought!  I knew you'd like it! (It was on TCM again just a few days ago during 31 days of Oscar).  We Fugitive fans just saw a Fuge epi with Percy Rodriguez (the doctor in Heart) a couple of weeks ago.  Yes, all the acting was great but Arkin was outstanding.

I'm almost as sad when Stacey Keach doesn't have time to play chess with Arkin as I am at the ending. 😩

I didn't think Locke had ever married Eastwood although they had a long relationship and she had 2 abortions during their time together. So I Googled and oh my! You should read about her! She married a guy in 1967 as filming on Heart began and they were married until her death in 2016. But they were like brother and sister and never consummated the marriage so she had affairs for  years.  She also sued Eastwood (which I remember) for a palimony-type thing because she claimed she gave up a more lucrative career for him. Eastwood was also married when he and Locke got together.

Anyway, as I said above earlier, I don't know why I can watch this movie over and over again for decades but never watch M. Cowboy because it's too sad.

The book, which is semi autobiographical, is in my top 10 best. While the movie doesn't capture the depth of the characters and the situations like the book, it is a must see film for film lovers everywhere. I watch this movie always hoping things will turn out differently.
Definitely worth the watch.

Pearlee

Thanks for the back round on Locke, one never knows what is going on behind the scenes with people.

I found Ratso, superbly played by Hoffman, a pitiful pathetic character throughout the movie.   I felt sorry for him and at the end when he died, the tears flowed.  But we all react differently to situations.  He and Arkin deserved Oscars for their performances in my book!
