Eighteen more gullible fools head off to Fiji to try and win a million dollars. It's an interesting cast with both a barber shop owner and a salon owner, so expect the cast to stay well groomed. The preshow stuff is the norm. "I plan to lay low until the end." "I'm a super smart lawyer/doctor/rocket scientist, but I won't tell anyone." "I'm a former pro athlete who's physically dominant, but I won't let them know that." "I'm modeling my game on whoever won recently." Yeah, just the usual preshow stuff we hear every year. We'll see what happens when they hit the beach. CBS was a bit less preachy last season, so let's see if that holds up again.
I don't have any early favorites and won't truly know who is who until about halfway through. With eighteen players and only about 45 minutes of actual show you only get a few minutes with each player. It's hard to pick a favorite or even know who's who for a few weeks. It all starts tonight!
On a somewhat related note, Canada's version of Big Brother starts soon, but they've killed the live feeds this year. Will CBS follow suit? We'll have to see. No live feeds would ruin the show, but CBS might follow Canada's lead.

I still have last season on the DVR that I never watched.
I guess I can say I'm over Survivor!

Can we have an update on your apartment and your cats? I'm hoping for good news.
Still waiting for the apartment. I'm reaching out to the apartment managers this week to see where I now stand. I was 27th in early November and 20th in late December. I should be around tenth now. May still looks fairly possible with July/August as worst case scenarios. The cats are still in the shelter as I wait. Hopefully the pace picks up and I can get in sooner.

Thank you for the update. Spring and summer are when a lot of people move, so hopefully an apartment becomes available soon and the cats can come home..

@gardenman- I feel the same way about getting to know the cast members. Takes a lot of time unless someone does something that makes them stand out. So glad to here from you and that you will be supplying us with your reviews and humor - I have missed you. Hope things work out for you re: your apt and cats. Looking forward to your posts.

I really enjoyed Tough As Nails so fingers crossed Survivor is good too...I haven't watched it to the end in years & it's the same with Big Brother too.

Spoilers included! If you don't want to know what happens, stop here.
An interesting start with a medical evac to start the season. (Almost two or three of them.) They may want to start padding obstacles instead of leaving them unpadded. They're taking the survivor part seriously this year. A concussion, dislocated shoulder, multiple lacerations, dehydration, yikes! They may need to rename the show "Medics of Survivor!"
Kind of funny when the show starts with an exasperated producer coaching Carolyn on what to say in her jungle confessional. Bear in mind she'd likely been briefed several times before reaching the island on what was expected. She may not be the most focused player. It was nice to get a little behind the scenes stuff.
The birdcage thing was new. Clever though. Put it in plain sight where everyone can see it. It makes it hard for anyone to hide that they got the idol. I'm guessing there was a rule against smashing the cage with a rock to get the idol. Bird cages aren't built like a vault. A few good whacks and you'd be in. Since no one even tried that they likely got briefed not to try it.
The inheritance advantage is weird. You inherit any idol or power used at that tribal. So, if you're voted out, do you stay? The idol or power would have been used for someone. Do you only inherit it if you're not voted out? The other advantage where you can skip voting then save the parchment to vote twice at the next tribal is interesting. That could get messy if the rest of the tribe is counting the votes. (And they do.)
The first immunity challenge was designed for full teams but with the medical evac each team ended up down a player. With all three teams down a player the strength issue grew larger. Slide puzzles are something Survivor players should practice a lot before going. They're becoming a regular feature on the show. Another poor swimmer who had to be dragged by her team. Why go on Survivor if you can't swim well?
Lots of plotting about exposing the idol holder and getting him out. Good strategy on their part. Get the powers out while you can. Let people with idols or powers linger and you're in trouble later. Will it work?
A pretty good first episode. Lots of airtime for the medics. Their families were likely thrilled. We saw them more in one episode than we typically see in a full season. Two players used the shot in the dark. The idol was played. Only three votes counted and the person voted out got killed by a single vote. All of the powers/idols/advantages were played in week one. A very nervous group at tribal and no one trusted anyone else.

Great recap @gardenman . Overall good first episode for the season. It will take me weeks to know who everyone is by name, but it looks like there are some interesting characters already. Carolyn sure made some first impression on me with her overall strange behavior, outbursts and facial expressions. She is a bit strange to say the least.
Been watching since the beginning, and looking forward to another interesting season.
