No Porgie and Bess

No They Call Me Mr. Tibbs....

It's still nice of them to do this though.

Re: Sidney Poitier Birthday Tribute Marathon

I read in his NY Times bio that he wasn't happy about doing Porgy and Bess.  And Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is frequently shown anyway.  Happy to see The Defiant Ones and some of his lesser known movies being shown.

"Porgy and Bess" has never been aired on TCM.

It is generally considered to be a "lost" film, as there are none, if any, complete,  quality prints known to be in existence.

I have also read that he did not want to make the film, but did so for career considerations.

@Johnnyeager In all the articles I've read about him, not one mentioned the very charming "To Sir, With Love."  My BF took me to see it and I loved it. His dancing was so fun to see and he taught those working class kids a lot about life. Too bad it gets overlooked but I'll be sure to record it.

Putting that in my day planner right now and thanks!

OK.  Not so much Turner Classic Movies, as this station didn't exist when the movie was done.  I have seen it on tv more than once over the span of many years.  Problem is I've never seen it from the beginning.

Even though TCM won't show the film doesn't mean another channel might not @Johnnyeager .  I will be checking out some African American Centric television stations to see what they have planned too.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Sidney Poitier Birthday Tribute Marathon

Porgy and Bess was a love story.  It is Otto Preminger, Gershwin, et. al, that won't allow the film to be aired.

In this legendary Gershwin opera set among the black residents of a fishing village in 1912 South Carolina, Bess - a woman with a disreputable history - tries to break free from her brutish lover Crown after he becomes wanted for murder. The only person willing to overlook her past and offer her shelter is the crippled Porgy. Their relationship is threatened by the disapproval of the townspeople, the presence of her old drug supplier Sportin' Life - and the threatened return of Crown.
