I don't recall David ever saying anything about Shannon's weight gain.  Shannon seemed to be the one obsessed with her weight.  Also, David had the affair before Shannon gained weight.  I'm not excusing the affair at all, but David didn't cheat because of weight issues.  He definitely should have asked for a separation or even ended the marriage, but that rarely seems to happen.  I may be in the minority, but I think David really did try to make the marriage work.  Just from what was shown in the HW episodes, Shannon was really in need of therapy, and I'm sure what was not recorded was even worse.  I have empathy for Shannon, but I really do hope she has gone into intense therapy.
