Re: SURVIVOR--EDGE OF EXTINCTION--Possible spoilers

For me it was an okay first episode. Not terrible not exciting. The best part was the annoying mommy choosing to keep playing. Joe as always a delight. The other retuning players were a snooze. I think next week will pick up.

Wrong is still wrong just because you benefited from it.

I'm hoping for a Celebrity Survivor. Chances are slim but still wouldn't that be fun? Jussie might be up for it.

Where Jussie's headed will be far more challenging than the show Survivor.

I think they could round up a celebrity cast for Survivor easier than for Big Brother since Survivor is so heavily edited and there are no live feeds. How one's depicted in Survivor is completely up to production through the editing process, so they could promise favorable edits to everyone. Would viewers want a cast of all decent, nice (at least after the editing) players? Nah! Reality shows need heroes and villains. Would some celebrities volunteer for the villain roles? Maybe. The producers of Survivor have total control over how the players are depicted and what they show us is often different from reality.

I think it was the season in Africa where they gave a very kind edit to one of the young women that had the rest of the cast angry at the reunion show. The editing had made her seem like a sweet, innocent child, and the rest of them horrible for wanting her gone. In fact, according to everyone later, she was a she-devil who was lucky they just voted her out and didn't feed her to the lions.

Reality shows without live feeds give you a highly edited version of reality where production can control who you love or hate. That's why I prefer Big Brother. With the live feeds we get to see a lot more of who the people really are, and less of who production wants us to think they are.

@gardenman I don't think your idea would work. Celebrities are to entitled. They would need to stay in a hotel. They would not sleep outside & I can't see them eating rice & fish. They would need a chef. So don't think that is going to happen. Would be interesting though.

Didn't they do a celebrity season?  I remember Lisa Whelchel (sp?) from Facts of LIfe participated.  She didn't whine or act entltled and did pretty well.

They've attempted a version of this called "I'm a Celebrity, Get me out of here".  The worst was Janice Dickensen (son?).  She really acted like an entitled witch.

They've never done a Celebrity Survivor.  I'm not sure any celebrities will actually sign on for that.  LOL

The one thing I like about Survivor and its authenticity - it remains true to itself.  It's always pushing the envelope and finding new and creative ways to keep the fans entertained.

lisa welchel was on SURVIVOR: PHILIPPINES. she lasted until the final tribal council and she was voted fan favorite. it wasnt a celebrity edition though.

would be interesting to see them bring in a celebrity again to play with the "regular" survivor players.

I was surprised Reem had a fire on the island. I thought they were going there with nothing, but they showed her by a fire at the end and a pretty basic shelter. I don't know how they're going to narrow the field if everyone goes to the island. It could become the never-ending season if they brought everyone back. We'll have to see how it all plays out. Those on the island the longest would have a hard time in a competition. Would they just do a random draw?

What we've learned is that Probst is withholding from the audience as well as the competitors.  He used some weasel words in the episode and in recent interviews.  I kind of like that.

I'm not surprised there was fire because she has to be able to see!  And no, there will never be a random draw.

I have empathy for her, she's had substance abuse issues and others.  Being raped by Bill Cosby really messed her up.  Some people can overcome these things and some cannot.

Agree and what decent celebrity has seven to eight weeks to spare.  Away from their kids and families.  Not filming or taping.  The only ones they could get would be the losers that were on Big Brother.  Big Brother UK started the celebrity thing and they get losers too including Frankie Grande.

@gardenman

We have this conversation every season LOL.  Survivor is not Big Brother.  BB is manipulated to the max and Survivor is minimal.  Indeed this season they let Dalton Ross see more than he's ever seen in all the time he's covered Survivor and here's his long article on everything he saw:

https://ew.com/tv/2019/02/20/survivor-edge-of-extinction-marooning/

I don't for one second believe they create characters.  You can't hide yourself on Survivor.  The cameras are on you 24/7 and the biggest difference with BB is that production interviews cast on BB and prompts them and even gives them cool lines to say in confession.

On Survivor no one but Probst is permitted to talk to the competitors once the game begins.  If you read the article (consider it research) you'll see what they go through before they ever get on that boat and what's going on behind the scenes.

It's long but it's the deepest dive (no pun intended) Survivor has ever given anyone.  Though there was the production person that broke her NDA and had a lot to say and none of it had to do with editing people to be "characters" and she confirmed that absolutely no one can talk to the competitors except Probst.

They even sequestered groups of All Stars which is fascinating and here too they sequestered the returnees from one another.  He even shows you the last meal they eat before the game begins.

As a writer you should enjoy all that research.
