I watched the first episode last night.  It said that it was based on true events.  It stars the woman who plays Serena Joy in Handmaid's Tale and I think Kate Blanchette.  The first episode was a bit disturbing and I think it might be a decent series.  Has anyone else watched it?  Does anyone know what the real events are?

These articles answer your questions abut teh true events and also identify the name of the actress from Handmaid's Tale you refer to.

Thank you--that was not the turn I expected (based on the article about the actual events)

I only have watched the first episode. The actress playing Sofie looked so familiar to me, I looked it up, the actress played Serena on The Handmaid's Tale.

I watched all six episodes, this was just sad all around.

Spoiler
What exactly made Sofie break, I'm guessing she must have been raped by the husband of the "cult", whatever you want to call it. The only happy story was at least Mina can have a good life living in Australia with the foster family, even though both her mother and sister are dead, who knows if she really will see her father again. They couldn't pay me enough money to work in a hell hole like that detention center. What a black eye for the center, housing an Australian citizen for months.
