Didn't they always have political sketches?  I've seen clips of Chevy playing President Ford.  That was from Season One.

Yes, they have always been political.  I remember the point/counter point sketches with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin discussing current political events.

I remember one sketch where Clinton was jogging and ordering McDonald's fast food at the same time.  It was hilarious.
