Remembering days of Old.... memories.

[ Edited ]

OK.. so I am showing my age here...63

I was watching an infomercial selling the tapes of a  the long ago TV show last night while channel surfing..... This  infomercial  was selling DVD's of     The Andy Williams show from 1962.... you know how you click onto a channel and sit there for a while and watch it while you are channel surfing....  I watched that infomercial for about a half hour....   and really enjoyed that half hour!

I had forgotten all about  Andy Williams...   his music... and as I sat there watching clips of his broadcast show.... I realized what a great singer he was!  And so nice looking!  And the show was very  much musical and comedy... lots of stars came on    and sang... Judy garland... the Osmond Brothers... Peggy Lea... Roy Rogers and on and on.... I almost  got to thinking how much I would like to have the DVD's of this show just to hear the music and see the old stars perform on the show.

That got me thinking to all the great shows  that were on at that time  I was growing up in the 1960's and into the 1970's.... Carol Burnett show, Donny and Marie Show....  Sonny and Cher.... So many Christmas shows.... lots of musical programs  etc.  Huge productions.  Many of them seen  on our little 13 inch black and white TV.

Now I know that today' s youth would think these types of shows would be dumb and stupid most likely... perhaps we were more innocent back then... laughed a bit easier and enjoyed just plain entertainment for entertainments value.   I do  not think that the music or the talent is less.... I really believe that our MINDSET as to what it takes to entertain us has shifted.... or perceptions of entertainment is so much more complicated... and less simple.

I guess what this thread is to say is that I really miss SIMPLE.  I really miss having a deep laught at something silly just to laugh on TV........and I feel sorry for this next generation  not knowing  how to watch a simple show like Laugh In and just laugh at all the silly antics just because you can...

Where did THAT GO?

Re: Remembering days of Old.... memories.

I was not alive when Bonanza was on and I just discovered it last year when I broke my wrist and had to stay indoors during a rain storm.

I loved it!  I thought I was turning on Little House which I loved as a kid until I noticed Charles Ingalls was never a cowboy.

I kept recognizing people I knew in other roles and it took me a while but I think I've seen every episode now.

There still is an audience for quality tv.   I watch Barney Miller and Maude reruns all the time and think they are the funniest thing on.  Nobody writes comedy like that anymore and it's a shame.

I'd kill for the next Golden Girls screenwriter right about now.

@SeaMaiden

Your post reminded me of this old saying....

Re: Remembering days of Old.... memories.

I love watching the old All in the Family and Colombo episodes. I’ve watched a few other series from long ago. Some don’t hold up quite as well. The most salient difference between the series of yesterday vs today is that the old programs were much slower-paced and plot-driven. Scenes were longer in the old days. I think that we have become more used to fast-paced, short-term plots. Our attention spans are short these days.

@Vivian  You are so right.  I think that's why I watch hardly anything because there is no substance to it.  There is nothing like a good 1970s classic these days.

@SeaMaiden  I remember seeing an interview once (I think with Norman Lear?) who said Hollywood pushes all the "old" people out and they want young fresh writers.  Writers don't write anything well without good old fashioned life experience.  Bring them back!

Never missed an episode I loved Bonanza.  The 60's and early 70's were so all about Westerns.  I was 11 and still remember the day it came over our car radio that Dan Blocker had passed away.  Hoss Cartwright was gone.  When you are young loosing your favorites feels a lot like loosing family.

When Dynasty first aired I could not believe that Linda Evans did not still look exactly like Audra.  I asked my husband at the end of the show where was she?  I thought I had missed her until he said it was Crystal.

Re: Remembering days of Old.... memories.

I had never heard of him @beckyb1012 until I started watching the show.  He's the only one I didn't recognize.

The others I was like Commander Adama from Battlestar Galactica, Charles Ingalls and Mr. Edwards from Little House, Adam Chandler from All My Children, and I was dying laughing when I kept trying to place the voice of Pernell Roberts.

I was like I know I know him too.  He sounds like that doctor guy in the hospital but it can't be him.  I finally looked him up and realized yes, same guy, just more weight and less hair than when I grew up with him on Trapper John.
