Really, REALLY OLD Children's TV

This topic should be reasonably easy, since there just wasn't too much children's program on just after the war, when TV (or tel-e-vision) sets started to become available.

SO, what's the VERY first kiddy TV show you can remember?

Re: Really, REALLY OLD Children's TV

I remember Winky Dink.  It was a cartoon show and we kids had a clear plastic sheet that could kind of stick to the tv and we could draw things on it to get Winky out of trouble.  Such as drawing a line from one cliff to another to represent a bridge so Winky could cross. (1953-1957)

Although when I was much older (pre-teen) my favorite tv show was National Velvet with Lori Martin, the Elizabeth Taylor look-a-like young actress. (1960-1962)

[was Homegirl] Love to be home . . . thus the screen name. Joined 2003.

I, too, remember Captain Kangaroo.  I also remember watching Sally Starr and Chief Halftown, as well as the Three Stooges.

Re: Really, REALLY OLD Children's TV

Captain Kangaroo, Roomper Room, Superman, Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Watch Mr. Wizard, Lassie, Pinky Lee (my late husband said he was watching The Pinky Lee show the time he had a heart attack in front of the TV cameras, back then everything was live).

There are tons of shows back then for all of us in the the 50's.  Many of us still remember them.

A local show in the Washington, DC area was called, "The Pick Temple Show".  The character was a Ranger with that name.  It was put on by a grocery store named Giant Food (which still exists).  You got to come on the show and sit on a small pony on your birthday and say, "Hi! Mommie, Daddy ....and so on".  I practiced for that over and over.  Finally I got the post card to come to the show.  But by then I'd had a growth spurt (both ways) and was to freaking big for the pony)!  I was so tramatized.  My Dad had a local guy come and bring his (bigger) pony so myself and my friends could ride the thing!  Ha!  I barely fit!

Yes, "Virginia" we had lots of good kids shows!  Then we heard the words, "TURN THAT TV OFF AND GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY".

Hey! Remember when parents used to say that and know the kids were safe?

Re: Really, REALLY OLD Children's TV

Howdy Doody, in the early 50s.  Then there were a couple of local programs - Sheriff Scotty, that had a small live audience consisting of Brownie Scouts, Cub Scouts, or Bluebirds.  My Brownie troop got to go once.  There was also Fred & Fay Show.  I was mortified to learn in my early teens that F & F also did a very adult nightclub act & used naughty words.
