Since you love Pat Conroy's writing, did you know that the inspiration for the father character was actually his father.  He wrote the Great Santini book as a in depth sketching of his father.  It's this book that became the basis for the father in Prince of Tides.

if you haven't read: Beach House (NY) or South of Broad  (Charleston), you are in for a treat !

He was a very talented writer !   Even DH enjoyed him and loves the scene I. Beach House where the young uncle is trying to convince the young teenage niece that he'd make a better guide, after all he'd buy her her first heels and teach her to smoke !

Thank you @jlkz for bringing up even more memories of Charleston and the Low Country for me. Hubby was born in Charleston, raised in the Low Country and summers on the coastal islands.

I do remember reading Beach Music by Pat Conroy. But, Prince of Tides was my favorite among his works. So glad your hubby enjoyed his work too.

Happy Reading All!

I have enjoyed The Prince of Tides movie many times. IMO it's not a great but a very good film. I also enjoy rewatching the movie Conrack with Jon Voight based on a Conroy book. The low country and drama are a good pairing.

Interesting @birdQ13 as I have not seen the movie (Conrack) based on Conroy's The Water is Wide. Read the book, spent time on Daufuskie Island, and have some experience with the Gullah Geechee culture.

Thanks for the posting as the movie will no doubt bring up memories. Have a great week!

Speaking of the Low Country, have you read any of Anne Rivers Siddons's books ?  Great storyteller and appreciated the culture and spirit of that area.

I have read all of her books and was saddened when she passed a while ago.

I love the film the Prince of Tides and yes, Streisand's son was very good in it as was the rest of the cast. Reminder: Jeroen Crabbe, who played Streisand's husband, was also a cad in Crossing Delancy (another film I love).

Yes, I have read some of her books. Now that goes back many decades ago. Agree Siddons did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the area.

Right now thinking about those evenings on the lake or beach enjoying a Low Country Boil aka Frogmore Stew. Cheers.
