Underreated I'd have to add Brian Dennehy and Robert Downey Jr..

Always thought character actors were much better at acting than most main actors, but main actors and actresses were prettier, more handsome, had more charisma, so studios thought they would sell more movies and they did and do.  Yes, they are overrated.  Too many to name.

There are so many character actors and because they always get lower billing, I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember their names, but do recognize when I see them.

The last movie I made a point of seeing in a  theater was Secretariat.  Although, there were 5 horses used,Trolley Boy was the main actor who played Secretariat.  He is one of the few I think worthy of being called a great actor, definitely, not overrated.

I love character actors. Some of my favorites are Robert Duvall, Chris Cooper, David Strathairn, Glenne Headley, Margo Martindale, Lorraine Toussaint, Brian Dennehy, Richard Farnsworth, Thelma Ritter, so many more.

Laura Linney is my favorite actress, and I feel she is underrated.

Sometimes it's the "character actor" is the one that makes or breaks a movie regardless who is on the top billing as the lead actor/actress.  I've seen it happen countless times.  However, the reason folk went to the theater was in fact, for the lead actor as someone stated.   A good thing Best Supporting Actor is a category for awards.

Denzel Washington wasn't always a box office draw.  Yet, he was an excellent character actor in his earlier work.  He is most definitely underrated and should have won awards for many films that were overlooked.

Thelma ritter for one

Agnes Morehead is in so many movies

Eve Arden another one who shows up a lot and is good in everything

There are actors that show up in all the westerns as character actors and they are so good.  Ken Curtis who played festus on gun smoke, I have seen him play several parts in gunsmoke before becoming festus.  I have been binge watching gunsmoke can you tell lol
