Re: Marie Antoinette - New Series on PBS

I watched the whole Marie Antoinette series on Passport. I enjoyed the costumes, the acting and the storeyline. How much of the series is true to history,I do not know. It is an entertainment series, not a documentary. The Court of Versailles was a very sexy place so don't expect it to be PG rated. It was announced that there will be a second season on PBS.

yeah, been my gripe for a long time about historical figures.

If you was misfortunate enough to watch a Henry VIII

remake (not on PBS they had the best 1 from yrs ago)

on TV. It was just plain nasty.

They must think to get people to watch historical figures they have to sex it up and show explicit scenes of just about everything the mind can conjure.

Not true in my case, I just want  movies based on FACT not some perverts idea of how people lived.

I have not seen this particular show, however I stay away from shows that have too much action and violence.

Not sure how that can be unless they make up bunch of stuff. Du Barry got beheaded when she went back to get her jewelry, was caught, and went to the guillotine after she was told if she would turn over her jewels she would be saved, she did, they didn't.

Louis was beheaded, Marie was beheaded, the son

died while in captivity, one daughter survived and kept low profile rest of her life. Marie's faithful lady in waiting went first, they put her head on a spike and paraded around with it in front of Marie's cell window.

they messed around to long to leave the country and paid for it. Too many slips ups.

Read history don't take for granted what U see on TV

Re: Marie Antoinette - New Series on PBS

The cast in this one is fantastic.  One assumes the outline of the story is true, but how the creators fill it the blanks is for ratings.

We're at episode 3 and we still have 6 years before this marriage is consummated.  They are going to need a LOT of filler.

[ Edited ]

I've watched it so far but not sure if I will continue or not. It's hardly compelling but there's something sort of appealing about it.  Instead of another Marie Antoinette redux, I'd have much preferred a second season of Dangerous Liaisons over on Starz, as was originally promised but then they cancelled it. That show had legs and was really fun viewing. I looked forward to every episode.

Re: Marie Antoinette - New Series on PBS

@stevieb  My Personal Opinion........

The best historical documentary series from that period was the Ovation channel series called Versailles.  It's set during the reign of King Louis XIV who built the Palace of Versailles.

The sound track is haunting.  I have it on my iPod.

I think Prime or Netflix is currently showing it.

@Mz iMac  Versailles was fun. I watched that on Ovation a few years back. If, though, you didn't catch Dangerous Liasons, it too was a lot of fun to watch. As for Anoinette, there have been so many versions and let's face it, we know how it ends.

Love these historical series!  SISI:  AUSTRIAN EMPRESS is also excellent.  Similar to MARIE A.   I watched this on Amazon Prime.

For those folks that get their panties in a twist because facts are tweeked or they show too much loving, TOO BAD, READ A HISTORY BOOK IF YOU WANT THE FACTS.

Don't miss SISI: AUSTRIAN  EMPRESS, 6 episodes, 2021, free with PBS Masterpiece subscription.  Second series coming soon to USA.
