I just watched this, it stars Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman ( in his last role) based on the play by the same name written by August Wilson. Tensions and temperatures rise at a Chicago music studio in 1927 when fiery, fearless blues singer Ma Rainey joins her band for a recording session. Now Davis is the star of the film, don't get me wrong, she was great, but Boseman steals the movie from her, giving a master class in acting. Both will surely be remembered come Oscar time. Boseman looks gaunt on screen, it's amazing how sick he was, he turned in a superb performance. By the way be forewarned, they use the N word a lot.

It has gotten excellent reviews. DH gets Netflix but I haven't watched anything yet. I think this may be my first Netflix.

I watched this yesterday. August Wilson is one of my favorite playwrights and I have seen Ma Rainey on stage. A critic wrote that Wilson's plays show the material and spiritual world in his characters. Ma Rainey would be the spiritual world and Levee would be the material world. Viola Davis wore padding, gold teeth prosthetic, heavy makeup and a horsehair wig for the role. It is fitting that this was Chadwick Boseman's last role.

Here's an excellent article that will give you some insight into Bosemen's poignant performance from his co-star and creative team.

@Jordan2Thanks for the reminder. I only know about her from my southern older than dirt relatives. I think one of them had an album (78?) or two of hers.

I watched this yesterday. Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman were superb and the rest of the cast was excellent. It made me sad that this was Chadwick Boseman's last role. He was so gifted and no matter what the part was he nailed it. If you haven't seen him as Jackie Robinson, James Brown or Thurgood Marshall, I highly recommend those movies. Of course he will always be T'Challa, the Black Panther. I am glad that his body of work will live on.

We watched it yesterday bittersweet now that we know how sick Chadwick was, he will be missed but what spiritual strength and preseverance he had in all his movies especially Ma Rainey. I wish it was longer and they did her childhood up to when and how she became a blues singer but from what I read they did not know much about her history. All the actors were great though....I loved how she need her coca cola before she would sing a note.
They restore her home that she lived in Columbus, Georgia and made into a museum I read.
