Re: MERV GRIFFIN IN THE SIXTIES

@Linda0215 ,  and @twinsister --

Monte Rock III, a breathless and funny guest:

Jack Douglas and Reiko.  He was a very beloved comedy writer, with sterling credits and an off-beat sensibility.  Reiko was lovely, saucy and hilarious--

Jack reminds me a little of Jason Robards--

Wasn't kooky, always entertaining raconteur Phyllis Newman a staple of the show?

And witty British actress, Hermione Gingold?

Merv also excelled at filling his guest panels with personalities who were there for conversation and fun .  Unlike today, they usually were not pushing the lastest movie, book or song.

The Gabors were frequent guests and always amusing, as was regular guest Charo!

@Oznell  - thanks for the pictures - a blast from the past!!  Yes, Phyllis Newman and Hermoine Gingold were frequent guests too.  Another regular guest was Pamela Mason - former wife of actor James Mason. She was funny and very frank in her comments.  His show was never boring!

Thank you @Oznell for this wonderful post.  I do remember Merv Griffin fondly.  His show was must see TV in my house in the 60's.  He came on at 8:30 every night in the NY/meto area.  My parents adored him and I did too.  I got to stay up and watch his show for a bit every night.  He was such a good interviewer.  He always had the most fascinating guests on. I remember all the characters on his show too.  Mrs. Miller in the audience, Jackie Moms Mabley (the commediene), and Monte Rock the III to name a few.  I think I cultivated my love for offbeat characters back then from watching his show!

@Linda0215 - I'm in the NY/metro area too and remember it was on from 8:30 - 10PM.  Also remember Moms Mabley, but forgot about Monte Rock the III!  Thanks for the reminder!  Do you remember Jack Douglas and his wife Reiko?  They were frequent guests too. He did have a  lot of offbeat characters on his show.

@twinsister OMG, yes! I forgot about Jack Douglas and Reiko!  Great memories of this show. I wonder if any of them are still around?  I think i did read somewhere recently that. Monte Rock III was in Vegas, but I could be wrong.

@Oznell Oh my gosh, this is like a blast from the past!  I wonder if there's somewhere we can watch those old episodes.  Maybe YouTube.  I'll have to check ❤️

I remember my mother liked Phyllis Newman, but I never figured out why.  lol

She also was a big fan of the Jack Paar show.

Does anyone recall if Johnny Carson replaced Paar ...  or were they on for some of the same years?

Re: MERV GRIFFIN IN THE SIXTIES

@Linda0215 - Sadly, both Jack Douglas and Reiko have passed.  You are right - Monte Rock is performing in Las Vegas.  I laugh at the name of his band - Disco Tex and the Se*-o-lettes!  LOL!

@Tinkrbl44 - Johnny Carson replaced Jack Paar on the Tonight Show.

Boy are those days long gone...Merv was on at 4PM, Mike Douglas at 3PM, Virginia Graham at 2PM, and Phil Donahue at 9AM.

My Mom would often go to the taping of the Virginia Graham Show with her Welcome Wagon Group.

Times have changed....what great memories.

@DREAMON - My mom also watched Mike Douglas at 4:30PM and the Virginia Graham show in the morning. If I  was home from school I would watch Virginia show with her.  She was very funny.  You are right - great memories.
