It's fun when TCM puts a pair of performances of two greats together like Barbara Stanwyck and Bette Davis. Each of them draw scathing portraits of women as acidic, duplicitous schemers:
3:30 p.m. Eastern-- "Baby Face" The ironically titled early film of Stanwyck shows her using her wiles to advance in the banking industry, stepping over men in the process. Also with George Brent and a young John Wayne, in a rare role placing him in an urban setting. For Stanwyck fans, this is anthropologically interesting, to see her near the beginning of her career, in light of her later development...
5:00 p.m. Eastern-- "The Little Foxes" Bette Davis tears into the role of "Regina", the craven matriarch of a flawed Southern family, as portrayed by Lillian Hellman in her famous play. Davis was always fearless in taking parts of deeply unsympathetic characters, at a time when few Hollywood actresses would go so far. She gets yeoman support from an outstanding cast, including the irreplaceable Herbert Marshall, Dan Duryea, Teresa Wright and Patricia Collinge.
