Renters insurance should be made mandatory by the landlords, it is very reasonable, maybe just a few hundred a year, and so worth it.

Have you ever collected on renter's insurance? First, you have to prove what was lost, then they depreciate it. You may have paid a thousand for your sofa and have your receipt, if it was bought ten years ago, you'll get next to nothing. If you purchase replacement insurance, it will cost much more than a few hundred a year. Better, to put that payment in a savings account and avoid fire hazards like open flame candles, electric blankets, and food left on the stove unattended.

That's just the society we live in. We live in a litigious society. There's the Go Fund Me money which will indeed be quite substantial, more than enough to cover the "stuff" she lost but it's not at all surprising that she'll sue Heche's estate. There's the pain and suffering, the emotional trauma. the loss of photos and memorabilia that cannot be replaced. I think Heche's estate will make an out of court settlement rather quickly because there's no question of who caused the accident and what that woman lost. Yes, that woman will end up financially better than she was before the accident but that's just the way it is.

Of course the landlord would make a claim against the estate to have the home repair or replaced ( it was red tagged as uninhabitable) since Anne is deceased.
Well, even if the owner was well-insured, I doubt his insurance would pay 100% to rebuild. He can make a claim against the estate, but it doesn't mean he'll get anything.

This woman also suffered trauma from having a car rammed into her house. It is rare for people to have renters insurance since many people are living paycheck to paycheck. Even if she did have insurance it cannot replace personal mementos.
Renters insurance isn't "rare". It's a smart thing to have, but sometimes people prefer to spend their discretionary income on "things" .... like iphones or multiple tatoos.
If you have car insurance, a small renters insurance policy can be added on for less than $100 a year. Of course, it isn't "necessary"; it's a judgment call.

@Tinkrbl44- The Estate would include her insurance and she was at fault. California is an at-fault insurance state.

I would imagine the homeowners insurance would go after the auto insurance since she was at fault, why should the homeowners insurance pay for her at fault situation?

Given Anne's likely net worth, she probably had an umbrella insurance policy for several million dollars. That should cover the rebuilding of the owners' home.
