Love is a Many Splendored Thing (1955)

My parents took me to see this movie when I was eight years old. I guess they wanted to see it and not pay a baby sitter. I loved the song, the Chinese dresses and the Hong Kong scenery, but the themes of mixed race prejudice and marital infidelity went right over my head.

On this afternoon on the Movies! channel.

Charles LeMaire's wardrobe for Jennifer Jones won the Oscar for Best Costume Design-Color.

The success of the film even launched a brief late 1950's fashion trend with the Cheongsam dress style.

One of my favorite movies!  I saw this advertised for today and am planning to watch.

William Holden was so handsome.  Jennifer Jones was good in the role.  Beautiful scenery and theme song.  The ending scene makes me teary every time.

I also saw this great oldie in the movies at a young age.  I may not have understood the undertones but when Jennifer Jones reads the letter that William Holden has died, I remember crying.  I still get choked up when I see this movie!!!!!!

Around the same time I saw one of my most favorite movies, Picnic, with Holden and Kim Novak.  I fell in love with that movie then and still watch it , never tire of it.  I love Bill Holden in both roles with Jennifer Jones and Kim Novak.  He has always been one of my favorite actors.

Movies Channel is celebrating William Holden today,

I wish I had more time to watch today.  William Holden is one of my favorite actors.  He may be best known for his movies in the 1950s and 60s, but my favorite Holden movie is Network from the 1970s.  His Max character is a good guy who is tough, but flawed and he nails getting it across that Max is far from perfect. The get-out speech given to Max by his wife when he leaves her for Diana (Faye Dunaway) is one of the film's most awesome scenes (and this movie is filled with classic awesome scenes).

Older Bill is pretty darn handsome and screen dominating in The Towering Inferno too, and like in so many of his movies over the years he was willing to share the lead and spotlight with a collection of fine well known actors.

Rumor had it that Jennifer Jones disliked Holden very much.

They shoud include his very famous Lucy appearance on Holden Day!!

Trix

Another great Bill Holden movie is Stalag 17 which I saw in the movies and loved.  Holden won an Academy Award for his role.  I was very young when I saw the movie but have seen it many times since, another one I never tire of.
