@PilatesLover Maybe since he is not American, he didn't realize just how awful his comments would be.

I'm going to put a different spin on this:
If ANYONE where to EVER harm one of my children, you better believe I would hunt them down (myself and those close to me). I don't care what color your skin is, what sex you are, your income, your job title, nothing. You're going to pay. If that makes me racist, so be it. It means that the majority of parents I know are also racist and they come in all colors, faiths and incomes as well.
Geez, people, FORTY YEARS AGO. He was 23 and a very very dear friend was raped by a black man; hence why he was looking for a black man. He stated very clearly, he would have done the SAME if the guy was white, a Scot, an Irishman, Chinese, etc. It's about getting revenge for the horrific crime NOT the color of the skin.
But I think what he can't get past is that he was willing to harm any black man in revenge, not even the rapist.
@SahmIam Maybe he wasn't really acting in all those "Taken" revenge movies he has done!

I just can't figure out why he would come out and say something like this for no reason.
Maybe in his mind he was trying to give an example of how a person could act when something tragic happens to their loved one.
He had to be over come with rage and hatred and wanted revenge.
I totally understand his anger.
Being an actor he has to make people like him for popularity so that's what I don't get. He really screwed up.IMO

Another reason to applaud him for his honesty about how he felt and that he sought therapy to deal with his feelings of rage inside him. Again, he stated no matter WHO it was, he wanted revenge. People are focusing ONLY on the fact he said "black man" and IMHO, that's the real problem.
I also find it interesting that people are not bothering to look at the when and where: working class/violent neighborhood in Northern Ireland in the early1970's is when this took place and he was in his early 20's. Whole different world back then. The man took the steps to CHANGE himself on his own and yet....all people are focusing on is "black man".

@DREAMON Or maybe he was showing he's just human like everyone else. He sought therapy for feeling such blood-lust. Sadly, in today's climate, I believe his message was completely lost. Who knows.

For those of you who did not see an interview, this did not come out of nowhere - he was asked how he channels the anger and intensity for his character, so he was explaining where that comes from. He is not backing down and there certainly have been mixed emotions on the talk shows. I just wonder how far back in our lives we have to go to not have something from our youth or decades old past not held against us in today's world with rapidly changing morals and rules.

Therapy is a wonderful thing for anyone with plans to do harm to another, that goes without saying. Revenge is not acceptable 40 years ago or now.
I can't imagine why he would tell an interviewer where he got his rage for an acting roll.
Having been attacked in my 20's I can tell you that I went through the legal system. It was far from perfact but I don't have it in me to take the law into my own hands. I'm sure his country had laws that he was breaking back then.
This is not a brave confession.

I agree....he could just be a very honest person who wanted to tell the story of what happened to him personally.

I'm not sure I have seen Liam Neeson in anything other than Schindler's List (thumbs up) and that movie with Jodie Foster (thumbs down). In general, his movies don't interest me.
This is not in any way to excuse his behavior, but as far as I know, he grew up in Northern Ireland during "the troubles," when terrorism was an every day threat, and gangs of Irish youth went out to inflict physical harm and death on others for no reason other than being Catholic (or Protestant).
Perhaps this irrational behavior in his youth was a learned behavior or an instictive reaction.
Regardless, I am of two minds on this. I agree with those that said his story about this incident may have been better left untold, as well as those who stated that this type of honest information can be useful, but perhaps in a different context.

What did he do? In the end, nothing.
He didn't go out looking for ANY black man to assault. I'm sure he saw some and did nothing. He went out hoping that a black man would assault HIM or give him a reason to get revenge for the assault on someone he cared about.
Much ado about nothing. So long ago...and no harm, no foul.
I wonder how long it's going to take before society comes to it's senses. All of the holier-than-thou's whose dirt hasn't been exposed...yet...condemning others.
