Re: Laurence of Arabia - HATE not "getting" a classic!!

When it first came out it was so exotic.  Loved it.

Then over the years there have been books about this period and they are even more interesting.  TPTB really did a number on this part of the world.

There are many classics that I don't get. One is Citizen Kane.

Classic film heresy, but I've never understood the appeal of Charlie Chaplin.

I would agree that movie is a tough slog.  When the wife begins taking opera lessons and is singing over and over and over, I gotta tune out.

I've watched it many times, but never all the way through.  If you read about the story, it helps....a little!

I think there was an episode of Seinfeld where Elaine admits to hating "The English Patient."

People couldn't believe it!

After watching that movie from beginning to end for the 3rd or 4th time, I finally figured out the meaning of "Rosebud. hidemf3.gif

I have tried several times, but I just could never get into Gone With The Wind.  Forget Laurence of Arabia.  Same thing.

I was thinking maybe it's that I don't like long movies, but that's not it, since Dances With Wolves is one of my all-time favorites.

Re: Laurence of Arabia - HATE not "getting" a classic!!

I agree w/you.  I could never get into this film either.  It just doesn't interest me.  Maybe O'Toole's accent is too thick and upper crust for my taste.  Maybe its the costumes and subject matter, but try as I may, just can't sit down and watch it thru.

I too agree about 'Gone w/the Wind'.  If it weren't for the handsome Clark Gable, no way could I sit thru that movie.  Subject matter just doesn't relate w/me.

Some movies I can watch over n over and pick up something different each time.  I can watch the 1st 2 'Godfather' films over n over, simply for Al Pacino's performance, all the character actors, and I think that was the only movie Diane Keaton ever made where she wasn't playing a ditzy character.
