July 2 The Trouble With Angels on TCM

July 2 at 6PM ET

The movie is set at St. Francis Academy, a fictional all-girls Catholic boarding school in Pennsylvania, operated by an order of nuns. Rosalind Russell plays the Mother Superior, who spends the movie at odds with Mary Clancy (Hayley Mills), a rebellious teenager, and her friend Rachel Devery (June Harding). The episodic story line follows the young women through their sophomore, junior and senior high-school years as they pull pranks on the sisters and repeatedly get into trouble.

TRIVIA

Producer William Frye personally offered his friend Greta Garbo one million dollars to play Mother Superior. When she declined, he offered the role to Rosalind Russell at a much lower salary.

According to Rosalind Russell, she and Hayley Mills did not get along during filming. She claimed that every time she turned around or walked away from Mills, she would stick her tongue out at her.

Mary Wickes, who did not know how to swim, was ordered to take swimming lessons at the YMCA by Producer William Frye for the pool scene with Hayley Mills and June Harding. But for some reason, Wickes didn't take the lessons and wouldn't jump in the pool on the day of shooting. Director Ida Lupino, furious with Wickes, called Frye and he suggested they hire a stunt double to play Wickes from the back and have the double jump in the deep end of the pool. Wickes is only seen in close-up at the shallow end of the pool and had to be escorted in and out of the water by assistants. This incident cost the production several thousands of dollars and put them behind schedule.

Re: July 2 The Trouble With Angels on TCM

Another favorite movie that I'm always happy to watch.

I remember my aunt taking me and my cousin to see this movie when it first came out. It such a cute movie.

I always loved the graduation scene and seeing all the girls wearing their white gowns and carrying the beautiful red bouquets.

@lmt Thanks for posting this.  I really enjoy watching this movie.

Years ago I got it on VHS tape so I could watch it.

I will try to watch it tomorrow.

ETA:  I also like watching Where Angels Go Trouble Follows.

I have seen this movie so many times and never tire of it.  It is an upbeat, happy, fun watch.  I love Rosalind Russell and she is so good as Mother Superior as is the entire cast!  If you need an escape from the craziness which surrounds us, this is the movie for you.

@lmt  As a fan of Hayley Mills, this is one of my favorites. My top fave is The Parent Trap. The movie trivia is interesting, especially regarding Mary Wickes, who was a gem in films.

Growing up near Ambler, I passed the site / building many times where this movie was made.
