He was also in My Mother the Car long before Coach.  I used to watch it as a kid, but it's one of the stupidest shows ever on the air.

Re: Jerry Van ******, star of ‘Coach,’ dead at 86

I love the episodes of the D i c k van D y k e show  where Jerry guested and, yes, played "Rob Petrie's" younger brother.

So interesting-- you can see the "sharing of genes" the brothers have, the sort of gentle affability, the affinity for loose physical comedy, the similarities in bone structure, etc.

But where D i c k seems a more controlled, disciplined performer, Jerry had a kind of impish zaniness that you only get hints of with D i c k.

The episode where Jerry is trying to overcome his shyness, but has been hypnotized or something to go into manic "extravert mode" when ever a phone rings ( I think that's the trigger), is hilarious.  He goes from Caspar Milquetoast to Mr. Overboard Personality, playing the banjo and generally cutting up!

Played off each other so well, just as D i c k did with his son Barry Van D y k e in "Diagnosis Murder".

RIP.

Woman Sad

I remember his stand up routine with his bassett hound in a wagon was very funny.  Then he had an ongoing version of it on Coach.

I enjoyed him in every one of his roles.  Just seeing him made me smile.
