Joseph Cotten's innate elegance and sophistication served him well in sort of elevated "drawing room" situations, but he was one actor of the "classic age in Hollywood" who could draw on reserves of darkness and despair so effectively. Thinking of @Highlands72 mention of "I'll Be Seeing You" in that regard.
And it made him such an asset in film noir, famously in "Shadow of a Doubt", "The Third Man" and "Niagara", but also in nifty little noir/suspense films like "Blueprint for Murder" and "The Steel Trap". I always find myself wishing there were more of him in "Gaslight"-- he seems a wee bit wasted in his small role of "knight to the rescue"...
To me he's just an indispensible actor, one of my favorites of all time.

Refreshing my memory at IMDB, I am reminded of his very impressive filmography.
I wasn't aware that he had done so many TV roles, even having his own show.

SpoilerI’m always sad when they hint at the reason that he became a sociopath.@lrmuffin
Please tell me what the hint is as to why he becomes a sociopath? I've seen this film many times and I don't know which seen you mean. Thanks

What's the hint? Is it his childhood accident?🤔

I love love love Joseph Cotten. DVRing them all. I could watch his movies over and over and never tire of them. JMO todays movies don't grab me that way.
