The only divorce that would surprise me is my own. If both or one of them is not happy in the marriage and they can't resolve things, divorce is best for everyone.

Non-celebrity marriages end all the time. 27 years is a long time.
I admit I don’t like the assumption sometimes made that it’s always the guy’s “fault”.
It’s unfortunate that they are divorcing, but 27 years together is a successful marriage by any measure.
If they are able to maintain an amicable separation, that says a lot about both of them.
ITA ... and I don't give any brownie points to married couples who stay together, even though they are miserable.
Staying together in that case can hardly be called a "successful" marriage, and it's a VERY bad example set for their children.

@fitfuninformed I'm not surprized at all either- ever since the golden age of Hollywoood there have been contractual marriages that used to be called "Lavender Marriages" in which gay actors or actresses marry someone to present as straight for the public and their career. This also extends into musicians/singers too- and this is still going on today. There are contractual marriages and contractual dating relationships in Hollywood.
I live in California and had a roommmate whose friend worked in the legal field and helped pen the contracts for these types of relationships. Even in today's world of more acceptance towards the LGBTQ+ community, actors and actresses are still strongly discouraged from coming out because it ruins the illusion of their playing hetero heartthrobs/startlets and potentially could make them lose a lot of their fanbase. I also think Hugh and his ex wife will coparent the kids well and go their seperate ways amicably.

There was a series called "The Arrangement" that came out in 2017 on the E Channel. It was about a woman who was paid 10 million dollars to marry a big star. The marriage was supposed to help the big star in denying rumors that he was gay. The series only lasted one season. I guess it hit too close to home for many people in the entertainment industry.

@lgfan I looked up the trailer for "The Arrangment" and it looks good! Thank you for bringing up that show- I bet that really did hit waaaay too close to home for people in the entertainment industry. I'll see if I can find it on Tubi or something to binge watch.

I think it's ridiculous to speculate that he's gay, just because they are ending their marriage.
People divorce all the time. Does that make every divorced guy gay? Every divorced woman a lesbian? Or does that just apply to celebrities?
People love gossip, rumors abound and uninformed people keep them going. SMH.
I wish them both well in whatever they choose to do for the future; sad that they feel the need to divorce, but only they know why.

I find it hard to believe that in this day and age they would have lavender marriages. Eventually they are found out or simply down play the rumors.
"Lavender marriages" are still necessary when you have bakers that refuse to bake cakes for gay couples because of their "beliefs". You also have people who will not support certain brands that support the gay community due to their "beliefs". While there is still discrimination against the gay community these marriages will continue.
