Re: Happy Birthday George Jetson today

Sci-fi writers thought we'd make way more strides than we have. George Jetson was born in 2022.  "2001: A Space Odyssey" should have happened 21 years ago. "Blade Runner" was set in 2019. "The Terminator" came back from 2029. (I'm pretty sure we won't see that much change in the next seven years. A global war that nearly wipes out humanity, yeah, that could happen, but the rise of autonomous robots like the Terminator are still a long way off.)

If you're writing sci-fi, set it far enough in the future that your readers/viewers won't outlive the date you've set it in. Go for say a hundred to a hundred and fifty years in the future instead of twenty, thirty, forty years in the future. As a rule, sci-fi writers are way more optimistic about how quickly things will advance than what happens in the real world.
