Hooty, briefly what's it about? Why does everything good have to come on Sunday and Monday?

It's based on a book ......

Olive is a caustic New England teacher, created by Elizabeth Strout in her Pulitzer Prize-winning book Olive Kitteridge. McDormand says that in literature, you come across rich characters like this all the time — in film, not so much.

"Female characters in literature are full," McDormand tells NPR's Melissa Block. "They're messy, they've got runny noses and burp and belch. Unfortunately, in film, female characters don't often have that kind of richness."

Now, Strout's collection of linked stories is being adapted for the screen. The two-part, four-hour miniseries airs on HBO on Sunday and Monday.

I don't know how I missed hearing about this, but thanks for the heads up. I see that Richard Jenkins has the role of Olive's husband. I love everything I've seen him in. Looking forward to watching this.

See, we're talking TV now. Yay! It CAN be done.

Did you read the book?

I don't know who Richard Jenkins is but I will look him up.

No, I haven't read the book, but it sounds like something I might like.

Richard Jenkins has been in a lot of shows and films, but most people remember him by Six Feet Under. He's a really great actor.

Oh, I know him! I LOVED him in Six Feet Under. This is great news.

The book is beautiful but it's not everyone's cup of tea. There have been discussions on it from time to time in the Book Forum and some people did not love it like I do or even like it.

I didn't care for the book at all. Olive Kitteridge is not a likeable character, and I didn't find any of it particularly interesting. I can't imagine how dull a mini-series based on it would be... But to each her own. Obviously a lot of people loved it, and it got a lot of critical acclaim.
