George Chakiris Surprised Me in 'White Christmas'

[ Edited ]

Sitting here munching on a snack of Cheerios while watching my recording of White Christmas, the Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney movie from 1954, when I suddenly noticed all the dark-haired young male dancers swirling around Rosemary in the number "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me."  Her character had returned to New York City (because she was angry with the Bing character) and was singing at the Carousel Club.

The head shape of one of the young men took my eye; I thought it a handsome and strong shape.  Then the young man turned around and faced the camera, and I almost dropped my cereal bowl.  "Is that George Chakiris?" I asked myself.  That face!  The cleft in his chin.  Just had to be.

Went to my Google and sure enough, it was.  Holy cow!  All the times I've watched this movie I have never spotted George.

For the young ones, George went on to star in West Side Story.

I spotted George the first time I saw the movie.  This is my favorite Christmas movie.  I just love Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye.  Did you know Vera Ellen did not sing in the movie, she was dubbed.  I could watch that movie over and over.  The song White Christmas can only be sung by Bing.

I have always thought GC was so talented, I loved him in Diamond Head and of course West Side Story, I did notice him dancing in White Christmas. I thought he should have been a much bigger star than he was in Hollywood.

You gals are so smart!  (And have terrific eyesight.)

I could not believe my eyes!  Honestly, I was flabbergasted when I spotted George.

I did not know Vera Ellen was dubbed.

My dear father's favorite song was "White Christmas," sung by Bing Crosby.  How Daddy loved it!

And yes, George had much talent.

I  always said that Greeks are blessed with great heritage and great genes, and that makes for gorgeous, handsome, and very beautiful people!

@golding76

The next time you watch the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" look for George Chakiris in the Marilyn Monroe "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" number as he's one of the dancers in that sequence. He's got faux gray streaks in his hair in that singing and dance number.

TY1,

If not alerted to look for George in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,  I most likely would not have recognized him.

Here is some dubbing trivia that might surprise you.

"Ironically, Debbie Reynolds' voice was dubbed by Betty Royce for the scenes where Reynolds' character dubs Lina Lamont's singing and speaking voice. And in one scene were Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is dubbing Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), Hagen is actually dubbing Reynolds dubbing Hagen on screen for just one line." ~TCM.com, Singin' in the Rain

Trudy Stevens did the singing for Vera-Ellen in White Christmas.  Vera-Ellen was well known for her dancing.

Noticed him the very first time. He's so handsome and it's one of my favorite Christmas movies. Can you believe how tiny Vera Ellen's waist is? My thigh isn't that small.
