Thank you @Xivambala for the info.  I searched and searched on the internet but could not find what you found out.

...Leo:  I am at a loss here to know if the child actor is portraying a child on the autism spectrum or is this a child actor who is on the autism spectrum.  I respect and would appreciate anyone who might enlighten me.  Many thanks in advance.

@mysoutherncomfort  I like that you asked this question. Like another poster I also tried and couldn't find anything definitive. This is my opinion and is based on being somewhat of an expert- at least on the person in my life who has autism and who I have dealt with daily for years.

Sidetrack here----> I have posted on some of The Good Doctor threads since the show began. It always perturbs me [I really want to say another "p" word but this one will do]  when a certain conversation/event would be criticized and some well meaning person would jump in and post "They know what they are doing. They have experts on Autism." Yes, experts on Autism. Probably someone who sees a couple of patients for 30 to 45 minutes a week and then decides he/she knows all there is to know about the condition and the people who have been diagnosed with it so he/she is now an "Expert". Similar to the people who call themselves Relationship Specialists and have never had a successful relationship in their lives or who have been married and divorced multiple times. Yes I want their advice.

Back to your question...I doubt this young boy has Autism. It would be too difficult to predict how he would react or to get him to act in a scene the way they need. Don't think they would take that chance. I say he's an actor who was hired to portray a young boy who has Autism or is on the Autism spectrum.

Like others here I am interested to see where this story will go. Again this is my opinion only.

--------------

Shooting at a high school in Arlington,Texas.  Huge school, 1800 plus students.  Apparently fight among some kids, one guy pulled out a gun and 4 people were hurt.  Still unclear - maybe 3 students and one teacher.  Kid has turned himself in to police, accompanied by his attorney.

Re: General Hospital ~ October 2021 ~ Spoilers Included

@grandma r   I am doing some research for a presentation on tv shows that have characters with certain disabilities or conditions and whether or not those characters are portrayed realistically. In my search the post you made in August came up. I was rather thrilled. It showed the name of the thread and your post.

@Wsmom. I agree with you about Leo.  If they do decide to go with an Autism storyline, I hope they do some research and do it properly.   The spectrum is very broad and functioning differs from case to case.  As one doctor commented "if you know 1 person with Autism,  you know 1 person with Autism".  There are so many variables with Autism.

Re: General Hospital ~ October 2021 ~ Spoilers Included

@Tique. I agree with your assessment concerning Leo.  My 2 cents worth:  the Autism spectrum is very broad.  There are those on the spectrum with Asperger's Syndrome.  Many are very high functioning individuals.   Imo, Austin is one.  Leo exhibits many Autistic traits, most especially his ability to focus on one thing in particular and block everything else out.  Many people with Autism are extremely intelligent,  they just communicate in a different way.  I'm not sure that those in charge at GH understand how complicated Autism is.  I only hope that if they open this road they handle it with the utmost care.  They will need actual specialists in this field to guide them.  Personally,  based on some of their other attempts with medical issues, I'm not hopeful.

I know what it's like to care for an Autistic child.  I know how behavior can change in an instant.  I know what it takes to have eyes on that child 24/7.

Sadly, these current writers have shown repeatedly that they don't do their homework or research.  Instead they rewrite history to suit their current ideas.

Re: General Hospital ~ October 2021 ~ Spoilers Included

@Tique. You are most welcome.  I don't watch The Good Doctor, but, I have seen promos.  The young man seems to be very good in his role.  I think he has Asperger's.   He's obviously very high functioning.

Some with Autism have a talent for finding the smallest differences in similar objects.  They are amazing at sorting sizes.  Noise is a big trigger.   We've gone down the rabbit hole with different food ingredients,  adding or eliminating certain things.  Certain behaviors can be helped with particular phrases.  For example, if trying to get the child's attention instead of repeatedly saying the child's name with no response, try his name along with "make eyes" or "see me".  Trying to get a positive response for a task could be asking the child to do something  and say "deal" and shake hands.

There is so much to learn and finding the right phrases for a particular person take lots of trial and error, plus a boatload of patience.

Best of luck with your research.  Canada as well as some of the Scandinavian countries have done some excellent studies.  There are also many studies regarding why boys are predominately affected.  Studies on twins and birth order are also interesting.

Sorry to ramble on.  This subject is so important and, if even one person gets something positive from it, it's a huge eye opener.
