In a 1971 episode called "Goldtrain, the bullet ", Miss Kitty does say that Matt Dillon IS her man!
I still watch Gunsmoke. I prefer the b&w 1/2 hour shows. I like both Chester and Festus.
Here's a link that discusses the episode.

And speaking of Dennis Weaver.......he had a Jeep before Jeeps weren't cool.
Thank you B. Mandrell and G. Jones.
Drove one through the streets of NYC. (McCloud)

I have it on right now. Kitty doesn't even show cleavage in Season 5, which is 1960.

As a kid, watching this show with my family was a "ritual."
I remember Amanda Blake doing an interview and she said that Miss Kitty and SOME of the girls were not prostitutes. Not all of the girls took men up to their rooms, they just flirted with the customers and got them to spend their money on alcohol. But these girls still would not have been accepted in "polite society."
Also, I remember the other characters would infer that Matt and Miss Kitty were an "item."
But I am probably wrong on this and am mis-remembering.

Nice topic! Like many here, I grew up with Gunsmoke....as a child, we watched it every Saturday night. It seems like The Naked City was on about that time as well. Regarding Festus versus Chester, I always liked Chester at the time and had trouble getting used to Festus. Now that DH occasionally watches the program, I find I prefer Festus. He's rough around the edges but his conversations with Doc are priceless.
As for Miss Kitty, I've never, ever thought of her as a Madam, and I never will! For me, she's always been the tough and shrewd owner of the Long Branch who is secretly in love with Matt Dillon.
