I believe the news reports said the accident happened at 8:20 PM and that Chris was arrested at 1:16 AM. It is not totally dark in the Midwest at 8:20 PM this time of year. Even if it had been, tractors in that part of the country are on the road as a regular event and there are lights on a tractor – both front & back. Farmers often work in their fields in the dark of night or before sunrise to bring in the crops before a frost in the fall. They sometimes work in the dark in the spring to get the fields planted - especially f weather has delayed getting the crops in on schedule. Even in the dark, drivers need to be cautious & aware for animals on a road – be it a deer or some other animal that has no lights but appears in the road ahead of your vehicle.
I read it as if the accident happened at 1 a.m., it makes more sense that the accident was earlier. I see tractors on the roads at that hour all the time, 1 a.m. not so much.

Tractors we had were huge and had HUGE floodlights and blinking lights all over Something like those would be rather difficult to miss. Lots of times framers have to plow or gather crops or plant seeds before bad weather comes in. Sometimes you have to finish one field and move equipment to the next or go back to where your pickup is--which might be down the road a-piece.

From USA Today:
"An Iowa State Patrol report obtained by the Register identified the vehicles as a 2008 Chevy pickup (Soules) and a 2640 John Deere tractor (Kenneth Mosher). The document also said that the truck rear-ended the tractor, sending both vehicles into roadside ditches.
Iowa State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Scott Bright told the Register that Soules left the crash scene on foot headed northbound. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office arrested him and he was taken to the hospital and then the jail, Bright said.
According to court documents, the general probable cause for Soules' charge — a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison — included possession of alcoholic beverages/containers, admissions/statements, property damage, and being identified by witnesses.
His bail has been set at $10,000 and a preliminary hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. on May 2.
If the bail amount is posted, Soules must be supervised and would not be allowed to leave Iowa without written consent from the court, the document states. He would be subject to electronic monitoring."

via tamara tattles:
Multiple new sites are reporting a fatal crash in rural Iowa involving Chris Soules, The Bachelor on season 19 of the ABC show.
A pickup truck, allegedly operated by Soules rear-ended a tractor in the 1000 block of Slater Avenue, north of Aurora around 8:30 p.m Monday the trailer was knocked off the road into a ditch on one side of the street and the 66-year-old driver of the trailer was taken to the hospital where he ultimately died. Soules allegedly crashed into a ditch on the opposite side of the street and then walked to a nearby residence, fleeing the scene and apparently failing to render aid.
Some sites are reporting that alcohol was found in the truck.
Local stations are reporting that Soules has a lengthy history of traffic violations including a DUI in 2005, numerous speeding and traffic tickets, and an open container violation in 2001. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says bond was set at $10,000. and he bonded out of jail after being arraigned this morning.

I imagine he was under the influence and knew he'd be tested for BAC. That is so awful that he left the scene of the crime. Terrible--totally speaks to his lack of character and only being concerned with himself.
My assumption is that is why he left the scene...shameful to not fess up.

A John Deere 2640 is not one of those.
If it had been, probably Soules would be the one in the hospital.

It could be or Could it be that he was stunned, walking away from the accident. (?) Sometimes the force of the crash could possibly stunn a driver, and that person could aimlessly walk around. Just thinking about the possibilities. Very sad situation for the injured and the deceased. RIP.
