@golding76 , Just yes, yes, yes!--and dare I say Elvis never abandoned his gospel interpretations.

Even in  his rawest performances, there was nothing lurid, just pure sensuality.

spider woman,

You touched on a key thought:  Elvis could make you "feel" the song, be it raw passion or a yearning for a higher, spiritual power.

Like Johnny Cash, Elvis had a way of touching the emotions of even nonbelievers with his gospel music.  I've seen it happen before my own eyes.

With the swelling of emotion that flowed from his renditions of a wide array of songs, Elvis seems almost operatic at times.

FLgardener,

I agree with you.  Elvis was a full mind and body experience!  He aroused feelings of all sorts.

What he did so successfully was to transport the listener.  I love when a musician can do that for me.

Yes, Tobes.  He was a showman like no other.   His gifts all contributed to his being a powerful entertainer.

This thread prompted me to play Elvis stuff on youtube, so DH and I have been listening for a few hours now (while he watches his college baseball team on TV, yet he won't let me shut off the music).

I had a funny thought.  Elvis actually does real singing..... not the type  of screeching and yowling and shouting like many younger musicians do these days.

If Elvis appeared on American Idol or America's Got Talent, he would shut other contestants  down!!

(My opinion only)
